Volkswagen has confirmed that its updated ID.4 and ID.5 electric SUVs remain eligible for the UK Government’s Electric Car Grant following a round of battery, powertrain, and feature enhancements. Pricing for both models continues to start at £36,995 (~$50,000 USD) on-the-road, with most specification changes applied at little or no additional cost. The confirmation resolves a question raised when the technical upgrades were first announced earlier this month.
Highlights
- ID.4 and ID.5 retain eligibility for the UK Electric Car Grant after specification upgrades
- ID.4 Pro 4MOTION now delivers 299 PS and up to 341 miles of WLTP combined range
- Vehicle-to-load (V2L) and bi-directional charging added across both model ranges
- ID.4 Pro 4MOTION trailer limit raised from 1,200 kg to 1,800 kg (braked, 12 percent)
Battery and Powertrain Changes
Selected trims across the ID.4 and ID.5 ranges now carry batteries with higher net capacity, increased power output, and longer ranges. The ID.4 Pure Essential and Pure Match move from a 52 kWh net battery producing 170 PS to a 58 kWh pack rated at 190 PS, lifting WLTP range from 222 to 265 miles. Pro Essential, Match, and Black Edition variants step up from 77 kWh to 79 kWh while retaining 286 PS output.
The ID.4 Pro 4MOTION and Pro Black Edition 4MOTION retain their 77 kWh battery but gain a power increase from 286 PS to 299 PS, with range rising from 325 to 341 miles. GTX Edition 4MOTION variants move from a 79 kWh to a 77 kWh net battery while holding 340 PS and adding a few miles of WLTP range through efficiency improvements.
The ID.5 range follows a similar pattern. Pure Match adopts the 58 kWh / 190 PS configuration with 272 miles of range. Pro variants step up to 79 kWh with range climbing to 351 miles, and GTX Edition 4MOTION gains modest range to 331 miles. All WLTP figures are manufacturer-stated and subject to real-world variation.
Pricing changes across affected trims range from no increase on Pure variants to £570 (~$770 USD) on Pro models and £655 (~$886 USD) on GTX variants.

V2L, Bi-Directional Charging, and Feature Additions
Vehicle-to-load and bi-directional charging capability has been added across both ID.4 and ID.5. With one of two optional adapters, the charge port can power external appliances such as camping gear or power tools. Volkswagen did not disclose output specifications or pricing for the adapters in the current announcement.
Additional updates applied to all trims include physical buttons on steering wheels, an expanded Traffic Assist system with Front Cross detection for pedestrians and cyclists, refined infotainment and driver attention monitoring, and inductive phone charging uprated from 5 to 15 watts. An optional more-efficient heat pump is also available. For ID.4 Pro 4MOTION variants, the braked trailer load limit has increased from 1,200 kg to 1,800 kg on a 12 percent grade.
Entry-level Pure Essential trims now receive 19-inch steel wheels as standard, while Pure Match trims gain a standard electric tailgate. A 230-volt power socket is offered as an option across both ranges.
UK Market Position
Pricing for the ID.4 and ID.5 starts at £36,995 (~$50,000 USD) on-the-road, with both models confirmed as eligible for the Government’s Electric Car Grant. The ID.4 is offered in eight UK trim levels, from Pure Essential to GTX Edition 4MOTION. The ID.5 is available in five trims, from Pure Match to GTX Edition 4MOTION.
Volkswagen launched the ID.4 in 2021 as its first fully electric SUV and first global EV, and the model was named 2021 World Car of the Year by a panel of more than 90 international motoring journalists across 24 countries. The ID.5 followed in the UK in early 2022 as the brand’s first electric SUV-coupé, and was the first Volkswagen to feature USB-PD ports capable of delivering up to 45 watts for laptops and similar devices.
The grant confirmation places the ID.4 and ID.5 among a widening group of UK-market EVs — including models from Hyundai, Nissan, Kia, and others — retaining or qualifying for Electric Car Grant support.
