Volkswagen has revealed its ambitious future roadmap, including a first glimpse of its entry-level electric vehicle (EV) at a Wolfsburg works meeting. CEO Thomas Schäfer emphasized Volkswagen’s commitment to affordable e-mobility, unveiling plans for a €20,000 EV set to debut in 2027. This model will play a key role in Volkswagen’s three-stage strategy—Accelerate, Attack, and Achieve—leading up to 2030. Additionally, the Wolfsburg plant will remain a core hub for innovation, producing new EVs based on the Scalable Systems Platform (SSP).
Key Highlights
- Volkswagen’s entry-level EV is expected to launch in 2027 with a base price of €20,000, making e-mobility accessible to more consumers.
- The first public reveal of the show car is planned for March 2025.
- Wolfsburg will be the primary production site for Volkswagen’s future compact EV lineup, including the next-generation electric Golf and T-Roc on the SSP platform.
- Volkswagen has already sold 1.35 million ID. electric vehicles, with 383,100 units sold in 2023 alone.
- The company’s “triple A” strategy (Accelerate, Attack, Achieve) aims to optimize costs, launch nine new EV models by 2027, and establish Volkswagen as a global leader in the volume EV segment.
Wolfsburg’s Role in Volkswagen’s EV Future
Schäfer reassured employees that Wolfsburg remains the heart of Volkswagen’s innovation. Production changes will include relocating Golf manufacturing to Mexico to make room for modern EV assembly lines. The next-generation Golf and high-volume T-Roc will be produced at Wolfsburg, ensuring the plant’s role as the company’s electric mobility hub.
The Scalable Systems Platform (SSP) will be Volkswagen’s next-gen fully digitalized, modular EV architecture, bringing efficiency and scalability to future models. Chairwoman Daniela Cavallo reaffirmed the importance of Wolfsburg, stating that it will be responsible for both technical development and high-volume EV production in the coming years.
Volkswagen’s Vision: Affordable and Profitable EVs
Volkswagen is positioning itself as the global leader in volume EV manufacturing by 2030. The ID.2all, set for release in 2026 at under €25,000, and the new €20,000 entry-level EV will form part of Volkswagen’s affordable EV lineup. This initiative aligns with Volkswagen’s goal of making high-quality electric mobility accessible to the masses while maintaining profitability.
With its aggressive expansion, cost optimization, and commitment to innovation, Volkswagen is setting the stage to lead the global EV market in the coming decade.
