Voltera, a notable player in the electric vehicle (EV) infrastructure sector, has successfully secured a $9.6 million federal grant from the Federal Highway Administration. This funding is earmarked for the development of zero-emission vehicle charging stations at key U.S. ports including Savannah, Los Angeles, and Long Beach. This initiative is part of the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Reduction of Truck Emissions at Port Facilities program, underscoring a significant step towards enhancing sustainable transportation.

Key Highlights:

  • Federal Grant Allocation: Voltera receives a $9.6 million grant to boost EV infrastructure at major U.S. ports.
  • Savannah and Wilmington Projects: The initiative includes building extensive charging facilities in Georgia and California.
  • Emission Reduction Goals: Projects aimed at significantly reducing carbon emissions from heavy-duty electric trucks.

Voltera’s strategic plan involves the establishment of sophisticated charging infrastructure designed to support heavy-duty electric trucks. The Savannah site is set to receive $7.8 million to develop a facility capable of delivering up to 23 megawatts of power across more than 120 charging stalls. This site alone could reduce emissions by up to 37,000 metric tons annually. Meanwhile, the Wilmington location will benefit from $1.8 million in funding to create 20 charging stalls with a capacity of 4 megawatts, potentially cutting emissions by up to 6,300 metric tons per year.

Company and Community Impact: Voltera’s CEO, Matt Horton, emphasized the importance of governmental support in realizing these projects: “The assistance from the administration and state and local government agencies has been critically helpful.” This sentiment is echoed by Congresswoman Nanette Barragán, who highlighted the direct benefits of such initiatives: “Our communities will benefit directly from the Jobs and Infrastructure Law through this federal investment in electric truck charging.”

The development of these facilities not only addresses the urgent need for emission reduction but also contributes to the economic vitality of the regions. The Wilmington project, for instance, is supported additionally by funding from the South Coast Air Quality Management District, illustrating a collaborative effort to tackle pollution and public health issues in port cities.

In addition to local benefits, Voltera’s national presence includes 21 charging projects, with over $150 million invested in real estate for ZEV infrastructure, demonstrating the company’s commitment and leadership in the EV sector.
