Volvo Cars has announced the EX60, an all-electric SUV claiming best-in-class range of up to 400 miles on a single charge in all-wheel drive configuration. The vehicle debuts the company’s SPA3 platform and 800-volt electrical architecture, with a full reveal scheduled for January 21, 2026.
Highlights
- Preliminary EPA-estimated range of 400 miles in AWD configuration, pending official certification
- 168 miles of range added in 10 minutes when using 400kW fast charging infrastructure
- New SPA3 architecture featuring cell-to-body battery integration and mega casting construction
- 10-year battery warranty included for all EX60 customers
SPA3 Platform and Efficiency Engineering
The EX60 introduces Volvo’s SPA3 architecture, which the company describes as its most advanced electric vehicle platform. Key efficiency gains come from cell-to-body technology that integrates the battery directly into the vehicle structure.
Volvo has developed the electric motors in-house for this platform. The battery cell design balances energy density with power delivery characteristics to extend driving range.
“With our new electric vehicle architecture, we directly address the main worries that customers have when considering a switch to a fully electric car,” said Anders Bell, Chief Technology Officer at Volvo Cars. “The result is class-leading range and fast charging speeds.”

Mega Casting Reduces Component Count
The EX60 is the first Volvo built using mega casting technology. This manufacturing process replaces hundreds of smaller parts with single, high-precision castings.
The technique reduces overall vehicle weight, contributing to improved efficiency and extended range.
800-Volt Fast Charging System
Volvo’s new 800-volt electrical system enables rapid charging speeds. Combined with in-house developed software, the system manages energy transfer into the battery more efficiently than previous Volvo EVs.
The company states the EX60 can add over 100 miles of range in minutes under optimal conditions. Lighter materials and reduced heat generation during charging support these faster times.
Adaptive Battery Management
Breathe Battery Technologies, a Volvo Cars portfolio company, contributed algorithms for adaptive charging management. The software continuously adjusts how the battery accepts power based on operating conditions.
This system maintains optimal battery performance across varying weather conditions and temperatures.
Preliminary Specifications and Disclaimers
Volvo notes that all range figures are preliminary estimates based on EPA testing cycles and are not guaranteed. Official EPA range certification will follow at a later date.
Actual range varies based on:
- Tire type and size
- Vehicle specification and powertrain
- Charge level and battery temperature
- Weather conditions and outdoor temperature
- Driving style, speed, and topography
Charging times depend on outdoor temperature, battery condition, and charger specifications. Published times reference testing at 400kW charging facilities.
The Volvo EX60 reveal event will be livestreamed on January 21, 2026.
