Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles has announced upgrades to its all-electric Transporter and Caravelle vans. The improvements include a larger 70 kWh battery pack, faster DC charging capability, and an optional 4Motion all-wheel drive system.
Highlights
- Battery capacity increases from 64 kWh to 70 kWh (net), boosting range to 380 kilometers (236 miles)
- DC fast charging now reaches 125 kW, enabling 10-80% charge in approximately 30 minutes
- New 4Motion AWD option combines rear motor with front-axle electric machine for improved traction
- Three power outputs available: 100 kW (136 PS), 160 kW (218 PS), and 210 kW (286 PS)
Battery and Range Improvements
The usable battery capacity of the e-Transporter and e-Caravelle increases from 64 kWh to approximately 70 kWh. This enables a range of up to 380 kilometers, representing a 13% improvement over the previous configuration.
Charging times have decreased substantially. At a 125 kW DC charging station, the high-voltage battery charges from 10% to 80% in approximately 30 minutes. This represents a reduction of about ten minutes compared to the previous charging curve.
A ten-minute charging stop now provides approximately 100 kilometers of additional range.
4Motion All-Wheel Drive System
Beginning in 2026, the electric Transporter will offer an optional 4Motion all-wheel drive system. The configuration combines the existing rear-mounted motor with an additional electric machine on the front axle.
The two electric drive units operate independently without mechanical coupling. This allows torque distribution between front and rear axles to adjust dynamically based on driving conditions.
Traction and Stability Control
The 4Motion system integrates with Electronic Stability Control (ESP) and traction control. Torque and braking force can be applied selectively to reduce oversteer or understeer.
Target applications include construction sites, wet roads, unpaved terrain, and driving on changing road surfaces.
Available Powertrains
The e-Transporter with 4Motion is available in three power configurations:
- 100 kW (136 PS)
- 160 kW (218 PS)
- 210 kW (286 PS)
