The Volkswagen Group and Rivian joint venture, RV Tech, has completed months of winter testing for its first-generation software-defined vehicle (SDV) architecture. Reference vehicles from Volkswagen, Audi, and Scout underwent validation in Arizona and northern Sweden.
Highlights
- RV Tech validated its production-intent zonal architecture across hundreds of tests in Phoenix and Arjeplog, Sweden.
- Teams tested all-wheel drive, traction control, driving performance, and over-the-air (OTA) update functionality under extreme winter conditions.
- The SDV architecture will underpin electric vehicles sold across markets in the Western Hemisphere.
- Volkswagen plans to launch a software qualification program in May, sending specialists to RV Tech’s Palo Alto facility.
Two-Phase Testing Program
The winter test program followed a two-phase structure. In Arizona, engineering teams from the brands and RV Tech finalized key software functions. They also prepared reference vehicles for cold-weather evaluation in Europe.
In Arjeplog, Sweden, the systems faced stress testing under snow and ice conditions. Engineers examined hardware-software interaction for functions including all-wheel drive, traction control, and driving dynamics. OTA update capability was also validated during this phase.
In total, the joint venture and brand teams completed hundreds of tests and validation cycles. Individual approval drives in Germany and Sweden with brand development leadership marked the program’s conclusion.
“We are accelerating toward the future. With the successful completion of the winter tests, our joint venture once again demonstrates the speed and precision of its work,” said Oliver Blume, CEO of the Volkswagen Group. “The close integration between the joint venture, our brands, and the Group follows a clear objective: to excite people with products and technologies that set new standards.”
Architecture Targets Western Hemisphere EV Lineup
The Volkswagen Group plans to deploy the SDV architecture across electric vehicles in Western Hemisphere markets. The platform is designed to support highly automated driving features and advanced infotainment systems. Both categories will receive continuous improvements through OTA updates.
The successful winter testing phase establishes the foundation for the next stages of development within RV Tech and individual Group brands.
Brands Building Internal Software Expertise
Volkswagen Passenger Cars is expected to launch a qualification program in early May. Software specialists will spend several months at RV Tech locations, including Palo Alto, to deepen their knowledge of the joint venture’s architecture and codebase.
After returning to Wolfsburg, those specialists will serve as internal experts. They will bring SDV expertise back into their development departments. Audi and Porsche are also preparing similar training programs.
