VINCI Autoroutes and Electreon have made history on France’s A10 motorway, successfully operating the world’s first dynamic wireless-charging system for electric vehicles under real traffic conditions—marking a breakthrough moment in EV infrastructure and sustainable mobility.
Key Takeaways
- Dynamic wireless-charging motorway debuts on France’s A10
- Over 300 kW peak power verified in live road tests
- Project led by VINCI Autoroutes, Electreon, and partners
- Trucks, buses, and passenger EVs charged while driving
- Paves the way for lighter, cheaper, and longer-range EVs
Charging While Driving Becomes Reality
Located 40 km southwest of Paris, the Charge as You Drive project allows electric vehicles equipped with receiver coils to recharge wirelessly from induction coils embedded beneath the road. Over 1.5 km of the A10 has been fitted for testing, confirming that Electreon’s technology can deliver consistent 200–300 kW charging power while vehicles are in motion.
Proven Performance Under Real-World Conditions
The pilot, supported by Bpifrance, includes VINCI Construction, Hutchinson, and Gustave Eiffel University. Four prototype vehicles—a truck, utility van, bus, and passenger car—are driving the equipped section daily. Testing validated the system’s safety, power output, and durability, while an environmental study by Carbone 4 confirmed potential for major CO₂ reductions and lower raw material consumption compared to traditional charging methods.
Transforming EV Infrastructure and Freight Mobility
Dynamic wireless charging could redefine EV design and logistics. By reducing battery size and weight, it enables greater efficiency, faster production, and lower cost of ownership—while eliminating downtime for recharging. The technology supports France’s National Low-Carbon Strategy and offers a model for global highway electrification.
Leaders See a Turning Point
“The initial results confirm the findings of previous studies. Deploying this technology on France’s main road networks will accelerate electrification and reduce emissions,” said Nicolas Notebaert, CEO of VINCI Concessions and President of VINCI Autoroutes.
“This is a pivotal moment in the global development of electric roads,” added Oren Ezer, CEO of Electreon. “Our system exceeds all government standards and is ready for large-scale deployment across Europe.”
The Bottom Line
The A10 wireless-charging motorway signals a new era for EV infrastructure, proving that on-the-move charging is no longer experimental—but an achievable, scalable solution to power next-generation electric mobility.
