XPeng Inc. and the Volkswagen Group have entered into an agreement to expand their technical collaboration on Electrical/Electronic (E/E) Architecture. This development builds on their prior master agreement, extending the jointly developed architecture beyond electric vehicles to include internal combustion engine (ICE) and plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) platforms in China.
Key Highlights
- Joint E/E Architecture will integrate into Volkswagen’s EV, ICE, and PHEV platforms in China.
- Collaboration accelerates software-defined vehicle strategy for faster iterations and OTA updates.
- Expansion shortens vehicle development cycles and achieves economies of scale.
- Demonstrates long-term strategic partnership between XPeng and Volkswagen Group.
- Enhances product competitiveness in China’s automotive market.
This expanded technical collaboration represents a significant milestone in the partnership between XPeng, a leading Chinese smart electric vehicle company, and the Volkswagen Group, one of the world’s top automobile manufacturers. The E/E Architecture, initially designed for electric vehicle platforms, has been adapted and validated for use across ICE and PHEV platforms through rigorous platform-oriented design. This cross-platform application allows the Volkswagen Group to achieve faster software iteration, Over-the-Air (OTA) updates, and significantly shortened vehicle development cycles.
The joint research and development teams from both companies have demonstrated the synergy of their collaboration by ensuring the architecture’s adaptability. As a result, the scale of vehicles equipped with this industry-leading E/E Architecture in the China market will expand substantially, enabling platform-driven economies of scale and boosting overall product competitiveness.
XPeng’s Chairman and CEO, Xiaopeng He, emphasized that the expanded collaboration underscores mutual trust and a commitment to innovation in smart electric vehicle technologies. Similarly, Ralf Brandstätter, CEO of Volkswagen Group China and Member of the Board of Management of Volkswagen AG for China, highlighted the commitment to delivering advanced solutions across all segments, including conventional powertrains. This approach strengthens technological leadership, reduces costs, and supports investments in innovations like fully connected, intelligent electric mobility.
