Electric vehicles (EVs) are gaining traction, but many drivers hesitate due to range anxiety—the fear of running out of battery power with no charging station nearby. Range extenders offer a solution by using a small combustion engine to generate electricity for the battery when its charge dips low, extending the vehicle’s driving range. ZF, a leading global technology company, is advancing this concept with its next-generation range extender technology, slated for production in 2026.

Despite the EV market’s growth, challenges like high battery costs and sparse charging networks slow adoption in some areas. Range extenders address these issues, acting as a safety net for drivers and boosting range confidence. This is especially valuable in regions like China, where Range Extended Electric Vehicles (REEVs) are surging in popularity, achieving ranges over 700 kilometers.

Key Highlights:

  • ZF is pioneering the next generation of range extender technology for EVs.
  • Production begins in 2026, meeting rising global demand.
  • Range extenders reduce range anxiety by extending EV driving distances.
  • Ideal for areas with limited charging infrastructure.
  • ZF’s systems are scalable, supporting diverse vehicle architectures.
  • Manufacturers gain shorter development cycles and cost savings.
  • Smaller, economical batteries help meet emission standards.
ZF Unveils Advanced EV Range Extender

ZF’s latest offerings, the electric Range Extender (eRE) and electric Range Extender plus (eRE+), cater to flexible, efficient drive needs. These systems support 400V and 800V architectures and integrate components like electric motors, inverters, and gearsets. The eRE+ adds a clutch and differential, doubling as a secondary drive option.

For manufacturers, ZF’s range extenders streamline development by building on existing battery-electric vehicle (BEV) platforms, cutting costs and complexity. They also enable smaller batteries, enhancing affordability and compliance with emission rules.

ZF’s advanced range extender technology tackles key EV adoption barriers, making electric driving more practical and appealing. By easing range concerns and supporting manufacturers, ZF is driving the shift toward sustainable mobility.
