Everged and Betacom have partnered with the Alabama Mobility & Power Center (AMP) at The University of Alabama to establish a first-of-its-kind, cyber-secure 5G ORAN innovation testbed. The initiative integrates advanced energy systems, artificial intelligence (AI), and industrial IoT (IIoT) to drive the future of smart mobility, power, and manufacturing.
Key Highlights
- Collaboration between Everged, Betacom, and The University of Alabama establishes a cutting-edge 5G ORAN testbed.
- LG Electronics’ UltraMax 5G ORAN platform provides secure, scalable network infrastructure.
- The initiative supports autonomous EV charging, smart grids, and Industry 4.0 applications.
- AMP’s campus will serve as a living laboratory for next-generation transportation and energy technologies.
The new innovation environment—powered by LG Electronics’ UltraMax 5G ORAN technology—will feature autonomous and mobile EV charging systems, state-of-the-art charging stations, and smart grid management solutions. This stand-alone private 5G network will allow researchers and industry partners to test and refine emerging technologies in a secure, real-world setting.
Johan Bjorklund, CEO of Betacom, said, “This partnership is a testament to the power of industry and academia working together to solve complex challenges. Soon the students and faculty at the University of Alabama will be able to experience the benefits of futuristic applications powered by private 5G.”
Building the Backbone for Future Mobility
Unlike traditional Wi-Fi, private 5G networks deliver software-managed, ultra-secure connectivity capable of supporting thousands of devices simultaneously. This infrastructure enables seamless communication for autonomous systems, data centers, and industrial operations, forming the foundation of Industry 4.0.
“Autonomous EV charging and next-generation mobility can’t happen without secure, high-performance connectivity,” said Jefferson W. Smith, CEO of Everged. “By combining our expertise with Betacom’s leadership in private 5G and the university’s research environment, we can accelerate the development of autonomous systems and resilient energy infrastructure.”
Powering Innovation Through Collaboration
This collaboration combines Everged’s smart energy systems, Betacom’s secure private wireless expertise, and LG Electronics’ UltraMax 5G ORAN platform to accelerate Industry 4.0 adoption and enhance the nation’s power infrastructure. It will also expand The University of Alabama’s innovation ecosystem, offering faculty, students, and partners an unparalleled research environment.
“This partnership represents a significant step forward for The University of Alabama and the Alabama Mobility & Power Center,” said Mike Oatridge, Executive Director of AMP. “By combining secure 5G ORAN capabilities with advanced energy and charging solutions, we are creating a unique environment for research, innovation, and real-world testing.”
Joonsung Lee, Vice President of 5G Product at LG Electronics, added, “LG Electronics is pleased to collaborate with Betacom, Everged, and Alabama Mobility and Power to provide an easily scalable, redundant, and secure enterprise ORAN solution across the campus.”
