Ample and Repsol Expand EV Battery Swapping

Ample and Repsol are expanding electric mobility in Madrid with new modular battery swapping stations. The technology offers a full EV charge in five minutes for Stellantis and Free2move fleets.

Ample and Repsol have announced a significant expansion of their electric vehicle (EV) infrastructure in Spain, launching new modular battery swapping stations in Madrid. This collaboration introduces three new stations at Repsol service station sites, leveraging Ample’s cutting-edge technology to accelerate electric mobility. The project is a key part of Repsol’s global mobility strategy and is supported by its investment arm, Repsol Corporate Venturing, which is also an investor in Ample.

Key Highlights

  • Ample and Repsol are launching three new battery swapping stations across Madrid, building upon an existing network.
  • The innovative technology allows an EV to receive a 100% charge in under five minutes, making it as fast as refueling a traditional gasoline vehicle.
  • The modular stations are compact and can be deployed in as little as three days, making them ideal for dense urban environments.
  • The initiative integrates vehicles from Stellantis and shared mobility fleets operated by Free2move.

Accelerating Electric Mobility in Spain

The expansion of battery swapping stations significantly strengthens Spain’s EV infrastructure and supports the country’s national goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2050. The first of the new stations, located in Montecarmelo, is already operational. Two additional sites on Avenida de Andalucía and in the Barajas area will open soon, complementing Ample’s existing station on Manuel Luna Street and extending coverage across the capital city. This strategic rollout aims to provide convenient and rapid charging solutions for a growing number of EV drivers.

Innovative Technology for Urban Environments

Ample’s technology is designed to make EV ownership more practical and convenient. The system allows a depleted EV battery to be swapped for a fully charged one in just five minutes, which dramatically reduces the downtime typically associated with electric vehicle charging. The stations themselves are modular, compact, and deployable in as little as three days. This flexibility allows for rapid installation in high-demand urban areas like Madrid, where space and time are critical factors. Furthermore, Ample’s system is engineered to be compatible with any electric vehicle, paving the way for broad adoption across different manufacturers.

A Strategic Partnership for Electrification

This project is built on a powerful collaboration between four key partners, each playing a critical role in its success. Ample provides its core modular battery swapping technology and services. Repsol contributes its extensive service station network, offering prime real estate and infrastructure for the stations. Stellantis, a leading automaker, has adapted vehicles like the Fiat 500e to be compatible with Ample’s system. Finally, Free2move is operating the first shared mobility fleet in Spain powered by this innovative battery swapping network.

“Our goal has always been to make EV battery swapping as fast, affordable, and convenient as refueling at a gas station,” said Khaled Hassounah, CEO of Ample. “By partnering with Repsol, Stellantis, and Free2move, we are demonstrating how battery swapping can scale in major European cities, enabling fleets and consumers to adopt electric mobility without compromise.”
