Volvo Group Plans 70 MW Mariestad Energy Park

Volvo Group plans a 70 MW/260 MWh battery energy park in Mariestad, Sweden, built on Volvo Energy BESS units and targeting 2027 operation, alongside a future test bed near its planned battery cell plant.

Volvo Group plans to build an energy park in Mariestad, Sweden, with an initial battery storage capacity of approximately 70 MW/260 MWh, targeting operation during 2027. The park will sit near the site of the company’s planned battery cell production plant and will be developed along two tracks: a large-scale battery storage facility and a future test bed for new energy solutions. According to the Volvo Group announcement, the storage capacity would make the site one of the largest energy parks in Sweden.

Two Development Tracks

The company describes the park as a site that will grow step by step. The first step installs large-scale energy storage to support the regional grid. For this phase, Volvo Group will use Volvo Battery Energy Storage Systems from its Volvo Energy business unit.

The second track is a future test bed for developing and testing new energy solutions. Volvo Group says it will serve as a customer demonstration site at real scale, with real business cases, as the company develops its energy solutions and offerings for customers.

How Will the Energy Park Support the Grid?

Volvo Group has most of its Swedish production in the Mariestad region, which the company characterizes as an area of high energy consumption. The battery storage facility is intended to add capacity and support grid resilience there.

Once operational, the park is expected to provide flexibility and stability to the regional energy market. That includes flexibility services under which stored energy can flow back into the local grid and supply power when needed. The company frames the project as a physical site supporting its transition toward fossil-free transport solutions, and one that will generate learnings for Volvo Group, its customers, and other partners.

“This initiative is a natural next step in the development of our Mariestad facility and reflects our vision of a more robust, flexible and sustainable energy system,” said Lars Stenqvist, responsible for the development of the Mariestad site at Volvo Group. “The energy park in Mariestad, that will be one of the largest in Sweden with some 70MW/260 MWh of battery storage will support Volvo Group’s and Sweden’s decarbonization ambitions. It will also be a great test bed for testing and further advance energy solutions for our customers.”

Battery Cell Plant and Regional Cluster

Volvo Group is establishing a large-scale battery cell production plant in Mariestad to meet demand for battery-electric heavy-duty vehicles and machines. The plant, located near the planned energy park, is scheduled to begin production after 2030.

Together with the company’s existing powertrain plant in nearby Skövde, the battery cell plant and energy park are intended to strengthen Volvo Group’s industrial and logistics cluster in the region. The company says the co-located facilities will create opportunities for shared infrastructure and capabilities, a model other vehicle makers are also pursuing as they move into grid-scale battery storage.
