Ample, a company specializing in electric vehicle technology, has deployed its first modular battery swapping stations in Madrid. This expansion is supported by a €9.76 million grant from the Spanish government’s Moves Singulares initiative, which aims to fund innovative technologies to accelerate the country’s transition to electric mobility. The company plans to install several more stations in Madrid’s city center, marking the start of a broader rollout to address key barriers to EV adoption.

Accelerating Madrid’s EV Transition
Madrid is a leader in Spain’s shift to electric vehicles, recording the highest number of EV registrations in the country. The city has set an ambitious goal to reduce emissions by 65% by 2030. To achieve this and support Spain’s national target of 5.5 million EVs on the road within the decade, Madrid is rapidly expanding its charging infrastructure.
The Spanish government selected Ample for the Moves Singulares award, recognizing its modular battery swapping technology as a key solution. The system is designed to overcome urban charging limitations, support high-use vehicle fleets, and lower vehicle emissions in densely populated areas.
Innovative and Rapid Charging
Ample’s battery swapping technology offers a significant advantage in convenience, providing a full charge in approximately five minutes—a speed comparable to refueling a gasoline-powered car. The system is engineered for versatility, allowing seamless integration with any EV model by replacing a depleted battery with a fully charged one.
A key feature of Ample’s stations is their modular design, which allows for rapid deployment. A complete station can be assembled in as little as three days, making it an ideal solution for deployment in dense urban environments like Madrid.
Strategic Partnerships and Future Outlook
“This grant is a tremendous step forward for Ample and the electric mobility space in Spain,” said Khaled Hassounah, CEO of Ample. “By partnering with the Spanish government, we are not just meeting the immediate infrastructure needs of Madrid’s growing population, but also laying the groundwork for a future-proof, sustainable urban mobility ecosystem.”
To further integrate its technology, Ample is enhancing its partnership with Stellantis. This collaboration will launch a swappable Fiat 500e for a car-sharing service operated by Stellantis’s mobility service, Free2move.
