Asahi Kasei Battery Separator Corporation has taken a major step toward bolstering the North American electric vehicle (EV) market with the groundbreaking of a new lithium-ion battery separator facility in Port Colborne, Ontario, Canada. Expected to begin commercial production in 2027, this plant will operate as a joint venture between Asahi Kasei and Honda, pending required permits and approvals.

Key Highlights:

  • Groundbreaking held on November 14 with government officials and executives from Asahi Kasei and Honda in attendance.
  • The facility aims to create over 300 full-time jobs during its first phase.
  • Production capacity will reach approximately 700 million square meters of coated lithium-ion battery separators per year.
  • Commercial production targeted for 2027, pending approvals.
  • Canada’s first large-scale wet-process separator plant, contributing to North America’s energy storage industry.

The groundbreaking event featured several notable participants, including government officials and executives from both Asahi Kasei and Honda. This facility is anticipated to produce around 700 million square meters of coated lithium-ion battery separator per year—a critical battery component that prevents short circuits while allowing energy transfer. Asahi Kasei expects to generate over 300 full-time jobs in its first phase, with visible construction activities such as structural development and utility connections starting soon.

This facility signifies a bold step in advancing innovation in battery technology,” said Koshiro Kudo, President and Representative Director of Asahi Kasei Corporation. “We are establishing a center of excellence here in Port Colborne that will further position Asahi Kasei as a leader in meeting the growing demand for electric vehicle battery separators across North America, helping drive the energy transition forward with cutting-edge technology.”

The Port Colborne plant will mark Canada’s first large-scale wet-process separator facility, a move that strengthens Asahi Kasei’s presence in the energy storage sector and aligns with its growth strategy. These battery separators are critical to enhancing lithium-ion battery performance by supporting higher energy density and durability—key features for electric vehicles and other energy storage applications.

To support the project’s development, Asahi Kasei has already begun local hiring, employing over five individuals to assist with the startup phase. In September, the company held an open house at the Vale Health & Wellness Centre in Port Colborne, allowing local residents to learn more about the facility and upcoming career opportunities. Asahi Kasei remains committed to community engagement and using local contractors for earthworks to ensure economic growth within the region.
