Audi is putting camouflaged A2 e-tron prototypes through cold-weather trials in Lapland, wind tunnel runs at up to 300 km/h (186 mph) in Ingolstadt, and public-road testing in Bavaria’s Altmühl Valley ahead of the model’s world premiere in fall 2026. CEO Gernot Döllner first confirmed the entry-level electric model family at the company’s Annual Media Conference, and the validation program is now under way at a secret test site in northern Sweden, the brand’s Technical Development wind tunnel, and on public roads. The compact battery-electric line will be built at Audi’s Ingolstadt plant.
Highlights
- World premiere of the A2 e-tron is set for fall 2026
- Cold-weather validation under way on snow, ice, and a frozen lake in Lapland
- Ingolstadt wind tunnel runs at up to 300 km/h (186 mph) with a 235 km/h (146 mph) rolling road
- Final road testing taking place in Bavaria’s Altmühl Valley region
Cold-Weather Trials in Lapland
Engineers are running the prototype at a secret site in northern Sweden, where icy temperatures, snow-covered roads, and a frozen-lake test track frame the winter program. The validation work covers driving dynamics, thermal management, and battery performance, with the interplay of the electric drive, brake control system, and suspension tuned by the minute.
Aerodynamic Work in the Ingolstadt Wind Tunnel
The distinctive roofline that defines the A2 e-tron’s profile is also central to its aerodynamic targets. Audi’s Technical Development wind tunnel generates wind speeds up to 300 km/h (186 mph), runs aeroacoustic measurement, and pairs the tunnel with a 235 km/h (146 mph) rolling road. The setup is used to refine airflow, noise behavior, and thermal stability on the prototype.
Road Testing in the Altmühl Valley
The development team is exercising the car on inclines, mixed road surfaces, and tight bends in Bavaria’s Altmühl Valley region. Real-world driving on public roads is intended to validate suspension tuning and the driver-assistance systems under everyday conditions.
Production at Ingolstadt
The fully electric A2 e-tron will be built at Audi’s headquarters plant in Ingolstadt, joining the existing fully electric model lines on site. The company says the A2 e-tron rounds out a refreshed lineup that now spans the fully electric compact segment through to the premium full-size segment, following more than 20 new models introduced in 2024 and 2025.
