Freelander has deployed more than 1,000 Freelander 8 test units worldwide in a validation program spanning humid tropical zones, desert heat and frigid northern regions. The brand, co-developed by Jaguar Land Rover and Chery Group, says the trials verify the SUV’s adaptability to the operating conditions international buyers encounter. Test vehicles have since moved into the Middle East for regional road testing, following the start of mass production in China.

Validation Program Spans Tropics to Sub-Zero
The Freelander 8 validation program covers a range of climates, terrains and real-world driving scenarios, according to the company. Test units have run trials in humid tropical environments, in deserts and in frigid northern regions.
Freelander says the breadth of the program is intended to confirm the model’s adaptability across the varied conditions international customers drive in, rather than a single home-market operating envelope.
What Does the Intelligent All-Terrain System Do?
The i-ATS system underpins the vehicle’s all-terrain capability. It offers nine terrain modes and adjusts the vehicle as surfaces and driving conditions change.
Two hardware elements support the system: a virtual central lock and a rear electronic limited-slip differential (e-LSD). Freelander says the combination improves stability and driver confidence in both off-road and on-road use.
Earlier validation work covered water crossings, steep climbs, rocky terrain and paved roads, the company reports.
Middle East Testing Targets Heat and Thermal Load
The Middle East is the newest phase of the validation roadmap. Test fleets are running assessments across desert, coastal and urban landscapes, measuring powertrain performance, thermal management efficiency and all-terrain reliability under the region’s operating demands.
Freelander says targeted thermal system changes are aimed at holding performance stable under sustained high temperatures. On the software side, the optional SIVP system — offered in select markets — handles remote parking and vehicle recall, so drivers do not have to cross large parking lots in high heat.
Abu Dhabi Event to Open Middle East Entry
The upcoming Abu Dhabi brand launch marks Freelander’s entry into the Middle East market, where the brand will present its all-terrain technology to regional audiences.
Freelander is a joint effort between Chery and Jaguar Land Rover, with JLR leading design and premium positioning while Chery supplies technology and supply chain capability. The brand reports more than 5,000 employees and five strategic hubs covering design, R&D, manufacturing and global operations.
