Austria’s eTaxi Project Revolutionizes EV Charging

eTaxi Austria has officially launched its expansive project featuring automated conductive Matrix Charging® technology. The project has started operation in Vienna’s Vorgartenstrasse and is underway at Schillerplatz in Graz. Eight taxi stands in Vienna and two in Graz are being outfitted with this innovative charging technology. The taxi stands will cater to a fleet of 66 electric taxis—56 in Vienna and 10 in Graz. This transformation has been brought to life with the collaboration of Volkswagen, Hyundai, and Austrian technology giant, Easelink.

Why It Matters

This development marks a significant stride towards a sustainable urban transport solution. With rising concerns over climate change, cities worldwide are seeking eco-friendly transit options. Vienna and Graz’s investment in electric taxis using Matrix Charging® technology underlines the cities’ commitment to reducing emissions and enhancing urban life quality.

Key Points

  • Automated Charging: The Matrix Charging® technology allows electric vehicles to charge without manual plugging. Vehicles are equipped with underbody connectors that automatically connect to taxi stand charging pads at the push of a button.
  • Modern EV Models: This infrastructure supports two of the latest electric vehicle models, the VW ID.4 and the Hyundai IONIQ 5.
  • Efficiency & Cost Benefits: The conductive energy transfer boasts a 99% efficiency. Moreover, the technology presents a more cost-effective solution compared to inductive charging systems.
  • Support: The Federal Ministry for Climate Action, Environment, Energy, Mobility, Innovation and Technology (BMK) has been instrumental in facilitating the transformation of taxi fleets since 2013.

Bottom Line

The eTaxi Austria project signifies a pivotal moment in Austria’s transportation industry. By 2025, only emission-free vehicles will be authorized for taxi operations in Austria. This venture not only paves the way for a greener future but also showcases Austria’s leading position in integrating innovative charging technology. The combined efforts of the government, city officials, and industry partners like Easelink highlight a unified approach to environmental responsibility and technological advancement.
