BAE Systems, a leading provider of heavy-duty electric propulsion solutions, has announced that it will supply 42 electric drive systems to the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA) for their new fleet of hybrid-electric buses. These buses, built by New Flyer, will incorporate BAE Systems’ advanced Gen3 electric drive systems, helping San Francisco reduce emissions and improve the efficiency of its public transit network.

Key Highlights:

  • Long-term Partnership: BAE Systems has been equipping SFMTA buses with electric drive technology since 2007.
  • Advanced Technology: The Gen3 system uses silicon carbide (SiC) materials and a compact design for better efficiency.
  • Environmental Impact: Hybrid buses can switch to full electric mode in green zones, cutting emissions without grid charging.
  • Proven Expertise: BAE Systems has over 19,000 propulsion systems in service globally.

Since 2007, BAE Systems has partnered with SFMTA, providing reliable electric drive technology for its transit buses. This enduring collaboration highlights the trust SFMTA places in BAE Systems’ solutions. The Gen3 system is the latest evolution, featuring advanced silicon carbide (SiC) materials that enhance electrical efficiency while maintaining a lightweight, compact structure. It includes a traction motor, energy storage, and smart-power electronics, delivering clean propulsion and accessory power with fewer components for easier maintenance and greater reliability.

For SFMTA, these hybrid buses support San Francisco’s goal of a zero-emission transit system. With features like engine start-stop and geofencing technology, the buses can operate in full electric mode in designated areas, reducing emissions and improving air quality without relying on grid-connected charging. This flexibility makes them a practical, eco-friendly option for the city.

BAE Systems brings nearly 30 years of experience to this project, with 19,000 propulsion systems in use worldwide across hybrid-electric, battery-electric, and hydrogen fuel cell vehicles. The Gen3 systems are developed and serviced at facilities in Endicott, New York, and Rochester, UK, ensuring top-quality performance.
