Blink Charging Co. has announced that its subsidiary, Blink Charging UK Ltd., was selected by Wakefield Council to significantly develop and expand the district’s public electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure. The project will focus on installing, owning, and operating new chargers in areas with limited access.
Key Highlights
- Blink Charging UK will install, own, and operate 184 new EV chargers across the Wakefield district.
- The project includes 54 on-street and 130 off-street charging stations.
- A £282,000 investment from the UK government’s Local Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (LEVI) fund supports the initiative.
- The new chargers will be installed within the next two years, contributing to Wakefield’s 2030 net-zero goals.
Project Aims and Funding
The collaboration is a key part of Wakefield’s strategy to achieve net-zero emissions and facilitate fully electric transportation by 2030. Supported by LEVI funding secured by the West Yorkshire Combined Authority (WYCA), the initiative aims to increase public EV charging accessibility, particularly for residents who do not have access to home charging. The LEVI fund is designed to help local authorities install public charging stations, bridging the gap between national climate goals and practical EV adoption.
Focus on Accessibility
A primary goal of the program is to ensure equitable access to charging infrastructure. In its collaboration with Blink, Wakefield aims to ensure a minimum of 20% of the new EV chargers are designed for seamless use by residents with a range of accessibility requirements, further supporting the widespread adoption of electric transportation.
Strategic Importance for Wakefield
The partnership is designed to meet the growing demand for public EV charging at no cost to the Council.
“With more people switching to EVs, additional public EV charging is needed,” said Councillor George Ayre, Wakefield Council’s Cabinet Member for Climate and Environment. “It means residents whose homes don’t allow for private EV chargers will only be a few minutes’ walk from a charger.”
Blink Charging’s UK Expansion
This project marks continued growth for Blink Charging across the United Kingdom as it provides charging solutions to support the global electrification of transportation.
“Delivering reliable, strategically placed EV charging where most needed supports the adoption of EVs, making it a more practical option for more residents,” stated Alex Calnan, Managing Director of Europe at Blink Charging. “Focusing on the development of Wakefield’s publicly accessible EV charging infrastructure is an essential step forward in making electric transportation a seamless part of everyday life across the district.”
