BMW Group and E.ON have opened orders for Germany’s first commercial vehicle-to-grid (V2G) charging package. The offering pairs the new BMW iX3 with a bidirectional wallbox and dedicated electricity tariff, enabling private customers to feed stored energy from their vehicle back into the power grid while earning annual bonuses of up to 720 euros.
Highlights
- Germany’s first commercial V2G package is now available, combining the BMW Wallbox Professional, an E.ON V2G electricity tariff, and a smart meter.
- BMW iX3 owners can offset up to 14,000 kilometers of annual driving costs through plug-in time bonuses and grid feed-in payments of 0.40 euros per kWh.
- The first 100 V2G customers receive a 700-euro discount on the 11 kW bidirectional BMW Wallbox Professional.
- A separate cost-optimized charging option is now available for all electrified BMW and MINI models across all drive generations.
How the V2G System Works
The program targets BMW Neue Klasse electric vehicles equipped with 6th-generation BMW eDrive technology. An algorithm co-developed by BMW and E.ON manages automatic charging and discharging cycles.
Customers earn bonuses based on plug-in time rather than actual energy transfer. The rate is 0.24 euros per hour, capped at 60 euros per month or 720 euros annually. That figure assumes 250 plug-in hours per month. Each kilowatt hour discharged back to the grid earns an additional 0.40 euros.
The My BMW app provides real-time control over charging limits and bonus tracking. Built-in protective functions keep the high-voltage battery within its optimal operating range throughout the V2G cycle.
V2G Tariff and Package Details
The complete package consists of three components:
- BMW Wallbox Professional: An 11 kW bidirectional charger, among the first of its kind on the market.
- E.ON ÖkoStrom Home & Drive V2G tariff: Fixed working price per kWh and a fixed base price covering both charging and household electricity.
- E.ON V2G Plus feed-in contract: Governs bonus payouts and grid discharge compensation.
- Smart meter: Required for V2G operation if not already installed.
The E.ON tariff offers price security with fixed rates for both EV charging and household electricity consumption.
Early Adopter Promotion
The first 100 BMW iX3 customers who sign up for the V2G electricity tariff from E.ON will receive a 700-euro voucher toward the BMW Wallbox Professional. The voucher is redeemable through the e-mobilio webshop (bmwgroup.e-mobilio.de) through December 31, 2026. The promotion is limited to private customers and available while supplies last.
Cost-Optimized Charging for All BMW and MINI EVs
Separately, BMW has introduced a cost-optimized charging function for all fully or partially electric BMW and MINI models. This feature automatically charges the vehicle when electricity prices are lowest, factoring in planned departure times and desired charge levels.
The system works with the BMW/MINI Wallbox Plus, the Multifunction Charger, and any AC charging product. It requires a compatible dynamic electricity tariff supporting BMW’s remote charging control functionality.
E.ON Partner Offer
BMW and MINI customers in Germany who select the E.ON ÖkoStrom Home & Drive tariff can access annual savings of up to 240 euros plus an exclusive 50-euro bonus on top of the standard new customer offer. Details are available at www.eon.de/de/pk/landingpage/kooperationen/bmw-mini.
Grid Stabilization and Energy Transition
V2G technology allows EV batteries to function as distributed energy storage. During periods of excess renewable energy supply, vehicles absorb power. When grid demand spikes, stored energy feeds back into the system.
This approach supports greater integration of renewable energy sources and can reduce long-term energy system costs. BMW noted that V2G currently supports photovoltaic system integration only for full feed-in configurations.
Industry Context
BMW and E.ON first announced Germany’s initial commercial V2G offering at IAA Mobility in September 2025. E.ON is featuring bidirectional and flexible charging at E-World, Europe’s largest energy trade fair, in Essen from February 10–12, 2026.
