The BMW Group and Encory GmbH have officially commissioned the Cell Recycling Competence Center (CRCC) in Salching, Lower Bavaria. This facility marks a significant step in the companies’ joint project to implement innovative direct recycling. The partners are utilizing regional resources to construct and operate this new competence hub.
Highlights
- Direct recycling eliminates energy-intensive chemical or thermal processing.
- Recovered materials feed directly back into the cell production cycle.
- Encory GmbH operates the facility while BMW Group retains intellectual property.
- The site completes a strategic triad of battery competence centers in Bavaria.
Advancing Battery Material Recovery
Direct recycling facilitates the mechanical dismantling of residual materials from battery cell production, including complete battery cells. Instead of completely reverting raw materials to their original chemical state, this process feeds them back into the production cycle.
This methodology eliminates the need for conventional energy-intensive chemical or thermal processing. The BMW Group developed this direct recycling approach to optimize efficiency.
Operations at the CRCC will scale up in stages. Once fully operational, the facility aims to recycle an annual volume of battery cell material in the mid-double-digit tonne range.
Recovered raw materials will support pilot production of battery cells. This reuse will occur at the company’s Cell Manufacturing Competence Center (CMCC) in Parsdorf.
Markus Fallböhmer, SVP of Battery Production at BMW AG, notes the technology’s potential to optimize battery cell production. It is conceivable that manufacturers could eventually utilize direct recycling in series production.
Operational Structure and Facility Details
The facility utilizes an existing hall in Salching, covering approximately 2,100 square meters of production and warehouse space. It includes nearly 350 square meters for offices and break rooms, along with rooftop photovoltaic systems.
Encory GmbH manages the construction and operation of the Competence Center. However, the BMW Group retains full intellectual property rights regarding the recycling method.
Joint Venture Logistics
Encory is a joint venture between the BMW Group and the Interzero Group, with each partner holding a 50-percent stake. The company develops logistics and consulting solutions for vehicle component recovery and reconditioning.
The new Competence Center will employ approximately 20 people. Construction and operation contracts were awarded primarily to German firms. Nearly half of these vendors are located within a 100-kilometer radius of Salching.
Strategic Network and Circular Economy
The BMW Group has consolidated its battery cell expertise across three specific locations to maximize efficiency.
- Battery Cell Competence Center (BCCC): Located in Munich, this facility houses labs for developing next-generation high-voltage battery cells.
- Cell Manufacturing Competence Center (CMCC): Located in Parsdorf, this site scales the best cells from the BCCC for pilot line series processes.
- Cell Recycling Competence Center (CRCC): Located in Salching, this center recycles surplus material from Parsdorf.
This network ensures short logistical distances between competence centers. It prevents valuable raw materials from being lost during the development and pilot phases.
The CRCC represents a critical step in the BMW Group’s strategy toward a circular economy. The company applies the principles of Re:Think, Re:Duce, Re:Use, and Re:Cycle to ensure resource efficiency.
