BMW, MINI Add Real-Time EV Charging Cost Tracking

BMW and MINI add real-time charging cost tracking for Neue Klasse models and new price-transparency tools to the My BMW App and MINI App, as BMW Group's network hits 3.1 million points.

BMW and MINI have added real-time charging cost tracking for Neue Klasse models and new tariff-comparison tools to the My BMW App and MINI App, as the BMW Group Charging network expands to 3.1 million points worldwide. The company said the update addresses a recurring complaint from long-distance EV drivers, who often lack a reliable way to compare prices across charging point operators before plugging in. In its announcement, BMW Group said the timing is meant to give holiday travelers greater cost clarity on multi-day electric road trips. The tools are available now in the My BMW App and MINI App, with in-car access on BMW models running Operating System 8.5 or later and the latest MINI models.

Highlights

  • The BMW Group Charging network reached 3.1 million points worldwide, up roughly 300,000 since December 2025, with Europe growing by 100,000 points to 1.1 million.
  • BMW Neue Klasse models running BMW Operating System X now show per-kWh pricing and a running energy-and-cost total during charging, similar to a fuel pump display.
  • The My BMW App and MINI App now surface every tariff saved in a customer’s Charging Wallet alongside local ad-hoc pricing, viewable in-car on BMW OS 8.5+ and the newest MINI models.
  • 21 percent of BMW Group Charging points in Europe are now part of the discounted Preferred Partner Network available under the Active tariff.

My BMW App and MINI App Show Charging Tariffs Upfront

Unlike gasoline pumps, public chargers rarely display price upfront, and costs can vary by tariff provider even at the same location. According to BMW Group, the My BMW App and MINI App now give drivers a structured view of nearby charging stations, including charging capacity, tariff, and resulting cost — viewable in the app or, on BMW models running Operating System 8.5 or later and the latest MINI models, directly on the vehicle’s display.

The distinguishing element, per the company, is that customers see every tariff already saved to their app-based Charging Wallet alongside any ad-hoc rate offered locally by the charging point operator, letting them identify the cheapest option before arriving.

Neue Klasse Models Get a Running Cost Total During Charging

For BMW Neue Klasse vehicles, the vehicle display and app now show the unit price per kilowatt-hour and track the energy added and total cost as a session progresses — the company likens it to the running total on a conventional fuel pump. The feature is available for BMW Neue Klasse vehicles running BMW Operating System X.

BMW Group said it continues to expand public charging access partly through the IONITY joint venture in Europe, as part of a broader push it describes as central to electric vehicle adoption.

Preferred Partner Network Expands Discounted Access

Customers on the Active tariff also get access to BMW/MINI Charging’s Preferred Partner Network, which offers discounted rates through selected premium providers. Partner selection varies by country, but the company said customers retain access to Preferred Partners across Europe even outside their home market. BMW Group reports that 21 percent of its European charging points now fall under this discounted network.

How Do BMW Maps and MINI Navigation Plan Charging Stops?

When a driver enters a destination beyond the vehicle’s current range, the cloud-based BMW Maps system or MINI Navigation calculates a charging-optimized route, which can also be planned in advance from home through the app. Drivers can set charging station preferences, choose a preferred minimum charge level in 5 percent increments, and prioritize specific charging providers; the app also shows the estimated duration and cost of a planned stop ahead of time.

As the vehicle nears a scheduled stop, the system checks that charger’s availability with increasing frequency and can reroute to an alternative if a planned charging point becomes unexpectedly unavailable. If the route includes a DC fast-charging stop, the high-voltage battery is preconditioned automatically during the drive for faster charging — a step drivers can also trigger manually. BMW Group said fleet-wide data on completed charging sessions, combined with live out-of-service data from charging operators, feeds back into the system to improve future route recommendations.
