The BYD DOLPHIN SURF, recognized as the World Urban Car of the Year, has earned a maximum five-star safety rating from the independent testing organization Euro NCAP. The compact electric vehicle (EV), which recently launched across Europe, demonstrated strong performance across all key evaluation areas, solidifying its position as a leading contender in its class. This top rating underscores that safety is not compromised in BYD’s more accessible models.

- The Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB) system performed well in tests involving cyclists and motorcyclists.
- The result is a standout score in the compact EV segment.
Detailed Test Performance
The BYD DOLPHIN SURF’s five-star rating is supported by impressive scores in the four major areas of Euro NCAP assessment. According to the official test report, the vehicle offers excellent overall performance in crash protection. It received a notable 82% for Adult Occupant protection, with the assessment highlighting good protection in both the side-barrier test and the more severe side pole impact, where it was awarded maximum points.
Protection for younger passengers was even more highly praised, earning an exceptional 86% score for Child Occupant protection. The vehicle’s safety features extend beyond its occupants. In the Vulnerable Road Users category, the DOLPHIN SURF scored 76%. A key factor in this was the performance of its Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB) system, which showed a good response to cyclists and motorcyclists. For its onboard safety systems, the vehicle earned a 77% score in the Safety Assist category, with Euro NCAP crediting its effective driver-monitoring technologies and lane-departure support system.
A Standout Achievement in the Compact Class
Achieving a five-star rating is particularly challenging for a more compact vehicle, making the DOLPHIN SURF’s result a significant accomplishment. This top-tier safety score helps it stand out in the competitive compact EV market, where it is now unmatched by many of its direct rivals.
“BYD is a technology company and the 120,000 engineers in our R&D division are constantly pushing to innovate and deliver better products for customers,” said Stella Li, Executive Vice President of BYD. “This test result shows that with DOLPHIN SURF, there is also no compromise on safety. The DOLPHIN SURF will continue to be a game changer that breaks down barriers to new-energy vehicle adoption.”
BYD’s Consistent Commitment to Safety
This five-star verdict for the DOLPHIN SURF is the eighth such rating for the brand since it entered the European passenger car market in 2022. This demonstrates a consistent focus on safety across the company’s expanding vehicle lineup. Other BYD models that have achieved a five-star Euro NCAP rating include the ATTO 3, SEAL, SEAL U, SEAL U DM-i, TANG, and SEALION 7. Notably, the SEALION 7 matched the highest-ever score recorded for Child Occupant protection, further cementing BYD’s reputation for producing safe vehicles.
