ChargeLab has announced a solution to support commercial Enel X Way EV chargers in the United States and Canada following Enel X Way’s decision to discontinue its EV charging business in North America. Site hosts with Enel X Way chargers are urged to contact ChargeLab for continued network services before Enel X Way servers are permanently shut down.

Key Highlights:

  • Enel X Way to end North American operations for EV charging, effective October 11, 2024.
  • ChargeLab offers to migrate compatible Enel X Way commercial chargers to its platform, ensuring continued network functionality.
  • Residential JuiceBox chargers to lose smart capabilities, reverting to basic functionality.

Enel X Way, a subsidiary of Enel S.p.A., has announced the closure of its EV charging business in the U.S. and Canada, effective October 11, 2024. As part of this decision, all residential JuiceBox chargers will lose their smart capabilities, and commercial chargers will lose all functionality without a replacement software solution. This move is part of Enel’s strategy to refocus EV charging efforts on markets where it operates an electricity retail business, primarily in Europe.

ChargeLab, a provider of back-end management software for commercial charging networks, is stepping in to fill the gap left by Enel X Way’s departure. The company is offering to take over compatible commercial chargers across the U.S. and Canada, allowing site hosts to continue offering charging services without interruption. Commercial site hosts are encouraged to contact ChargeLab before Enel X Way’s servers are permanently shut down to discuss migration options and ensure continuity of service.

Founded in 2013, JuiceBox was originally developed by eMotorWerks, a California-based startup that was later acquired by Enel S.p.A. Enel’s decision to exit the North American market affects thousands of site hosts relying on JuiceBox chargers. While residential users will see their devices lose smart functionality, ChargeLab is focused on helping commercial site hosts maintain their charging capabilities.

ChargeLab’s software is hardware-agnostic, meaning it supports over 100 different EV charger models from various manufacturers, including ABB, Eaton, EVBox, and others. ChargeLab began integration testing with Enel X Way chargers ahead of today’s announcement, anticipating the potential need for a seamless migration. According to ChargeLab President Shaun Stewart, “We understand the frustration that commercial site hosts face receiving only 10 days’ notice before their back-end software services are discontinued. Our team is prioritizing Enel X Way customers who wish to migrate to ChargeLab. I encourage these site hosts to contact our team today.”

While ChargeLab does not currently offer a migration solution for residential JuiceBox chargers due to technical complexities, they recommend utilities and aggregators remove JuiceBox chargers from approved equipment lists for residential programs. Despite the challenges presented by Enel X Way’s exit, ChargeLab remains committed to supporting the continued growth of electric vehicle adoption across North America.

Commercial hosts impacted by Enel X Way’s discontinuation are advised to reach out to ChargeLab as soon as possible to ensure the migration process can be completed before the Enel X Way shutdown. ChargeLab aims to provide a reliable solution to maintain network functionality for commercial charging infrastructure amid this transition.
