Chula Vista EV Fast Charging Hub Launches

Skycharger and Electric Era have launched a new EV fast charging hub in Chula Vista, featuring advanced battery storage technology to support drivers, fleets, and the regional power grid.

Skycharger, in a partnership with Electric Era, has commissioned a new public fast-charging site in Chula Vista at Palomar Valero. This project marks a significant step in the companies’ collaborative effort to expand electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure along the I-5 corridor, from Washington to the Mexico border.

Key Highlights

  • A new public fast-charging site is now operational at 873 Palomar Street in Chula Vista.
  • The station features four dual-port 200-kilowatt fast chargers, capable of servicing up to eight vehicles at once.
  • A grid-tied battery energy storage system supplements grid power with 120 kW to manage peak demand.
  • The project is a key part of Skycharger’s plan to build out its West Coast charging network.

Strategic Location and Advanced Technology

The new charging hub is strategically located to serve a diverse range of users. According to Johannes Copeland, Chief Operating Officer of Skycharger, the site provides crucial corridor charging for cross-border traffic while also serving local EV drivers from Chula Vista and National City.

The station’s design incorporates a sophisticated battery energy storage system. This system helps balance peak electricity demand and manage time-of-use variations, ensuring reliable service for drivers and supporting local grid stability. The integration of charging and storage creates a more resilient and efficient infrastructure.

Partnership and Project Execution

The project was a collaborative effort between several key partners. Electric Era provided a fully integrated fast charging solution, which included the charging dispensers, the battery energy storage system, and the energy management system. Tait Services acted as the EPC contractor, overseeing the site’s construction and the installation of the charging station. Together, these partners successfully brought the site online to serve one of the nation’s busiest transportation corridors.

A Model for Future Infrastructure

Kyler Schmitz, Chief Revenue Officer of Electric Era, stated that building next-generation EV infrastructure requires both speed and intelligence. The Chula Vista site demonstrates how battery-backed fast charging can deliver dependable service to drivers while simultaneously supporting utilities and the surrounding community. This project serves as a model for what widespread, reliable EV charging infrastructure can look like.

Expanding the West Coast Network

The commissioning of the Chula Vista location follows other recent milestones in Williams, CA, and Arlington, WA. It represents the continued buildout of Skycharger’s West Coast network, which is designed to ensure reliable charging access for both passenger and commercial EVs. In the San Diego region, Skycharger is also advancing the development of electric fleet and drayage truck stop projects to accelerate the transition to zero-emission freight transportation.

About Skycharger

Skycharger, a wholly owned subsidiary of Skyview Ventures, owns and operates a growing network of electric vehicle (EV) charging stations. Established in 2013, the company owns and operates charging stations for light-, medium- and heavy-duty vehicles and has stations operating in seven states. The network includes the West Coast Highway Corridor (WCHC) DC Fast Charging Network located at highway exits throughout California. The WCHC is the fourth largest DC fast charging network in California. The company recently began operations at its first fleet charging hub for medium- and heavy-duty trucks and is running over 100 trucks out of that hub.
