BMW Group’s Gen6 high-voltage battery, an 800-volt system built on new BMW round cells with a high-nickel cathode, won the “Global New Energy Vehicle Innovative Technology” award at the 2026 World New Energy Vehicle Congress (WNEVC) in China this week. According to BMW Group, the judges recognized the battery’s key technologies and the company’s approach to high-voltage battery development. BMW says it is the only automaker from outside China to receive one of the congress’s technology awards this year.
Highlights
- Award: “Global New Energy Vehicle Innovative Technology” at the 2026 WNEVC in China
- Track record: BMW’s fifth consecutive year of WNEVC recognition for technological innovation, and its sixth overall
- Patents: BMW filed patent applications for more than 500 innovations in moving from fifth- to sixth-generation eDrive technology
- Architecture: The full Gen6 battery portfolio is designed for 800 volts, supports bidirectional charging, and is compatible with both 400-volt and 800-volt charging infrastructure
What Did BMW Win the WNEVC Award For?
The award covers the key technologies of the Gen6 high-voltage battery, centered on BMW’s new round cells with a high-nickel cathode. BMW says the recognition reflects its combined focus on safety, efficiency, sustainability, and customer benefits.
The WNEVC is an annual conference in China on electromobility and new energy vehicles. It brings together representatives from industry, academia, and government.
“We are very proud to receive this international award for our Gen6 high-voltage battery. It confirms our long-term approach of combining technological innovation with the highest standards of quality and safety and genuine customer relevance. With the Neue Klasse, we are setting new benchmarks in this area,” said Jochen Goller, member of the Board of Management of BMW AG responsible for Customer, Brands, Sales.
BMW says it develops and produces the battery in-house across the value chain. That work runs from cell chemistry through battery development and production to vehicle integration. The company describes the battery as a global offering designed to meet safety requirements worldwide.
How Is the Gen6 Battery Built?
The Gen6 concept combines three elements into one system: the new BMW round cells, BMW’s in-house Energy Master hardware and software, and integration of the battery into the vehicle architecture. According to BMW, this approach lets engineers tune range, charging speed, efficiency, sustainability, and driving dynamics together.
The Gen6 high-voltage battery uses a cell-to-pack design. The cells are integrated directly into the battery without a module structure, which BMW says delivers high energy density at the battery level and makes efficient use of installation space.
Safety Design
BMW says safety was the top priority during development. Key features include:
- Steel-housed cells: The new round cells use a steel housing with integrated safety mechanisms.
- Multi-stage insulation: The battery uses a multi-stage insulation concept.
- Thermal and energy management: The system includes comprehensive thermal and energy management.
- In-house validation: BMW’s cell expertise supports ongoing scientific and technical validation throughout development.
What Does the Energy Master Do?
Mounted on the battery, the Energy Master manages energy flow, powers the e-drives and the vehicle’s electrical system, and serves as the data interface for the high-voltage battery. It enables compatibility with both 400-volt and 800-volt charging infrastructure as well as bidirectional charging. BMW says the overall system is designed to be open to other cell technologies.
Gen6 Rollout Across the Neue Klasse
Sixth-generation BMW eDrive technology is the foundation of the Neue Klasse. BMW will introduce it gradually across its entire fully electric portfolio.
“The Gen6 high-voltage battery represents a technological leap across all customer-relevant features. Its innovative, flat design with cylindrical cells paves the way for greater range and faster charging, while maintaining the highest level of safety. As a core technology of the Neue Klasse, it forms the foundation for fully-electric driving pleasure across the entire BMW portfolio,” said Thomas Engelhardt, Senior Vice President Development High-Voltage Batteries, Charging at the BMW Group.
