Continental has secured an original-equipment tire contract for the new smart #5, the brand’s largest all-electric SUV. The EcoContact 7 will ship as standard in two sizes: 255/45 R20 and 255/40 R21. Both are XL-rated for increased load capacity and approved for speeds up to 240 km/h.
Highlights
- Continental’s EcoContact 7 is the factory-standard tire for the smart #5 in 20- and 21-inch sizes
- Aerodimple sidewall technology reduces air turbulence to improve EV range
- New carcass and compound materials lower rolling resistance and internal friction
- A silent-pattern tread design targets noise reduction at urban speeds around 50 km/h
Aerodynamic Sidewall Design Targets Range
The EcoContact 7 uses a sidewall structure Continental calls “aerodimple.” Inspired by the dimpled surface of a golf ball, the design reduces air turbulence behind the tire. This helps the vehicle use less energy at speed.
In addition, Continental developed new materials for the tire’s carcass, inner layer, and sidewall. These reduce internal friction and lower rolling resistance. An adapted rubber compound further improves energy efficiency.
Urban Noise Reduction
The tire also features a silent-pattern tread design. Continental tuned the pattern to frequencies that typically occur at speeds around 50 km/h. As a result, the EcoContact 7 reduces rolling noise in urban driving conditions.
Approved Sizes
The following sizes are approved for the smart #5 across multiple markets:
- EcoContact 7, 255/45 R20 105 V XL FR
- EcoContact 7, 255/40 R21 102 V XL FR
