Daimler Truck Initiates Electric eM2 Production

Daimler Truck North America LLC (DTNA) has kick-started the series production of its Freightliner eM2, an innovative battery electric medium-duty truck, tailored for pick-up and delivery purposes. This new series is being rolled out from DTNA’s manufacturing facility situated in Portland, Oregon.

Why It Matters

Transitioning to electric trucks represents a significant step toward sustainability and a reduced carbon footprint. With the eM2 entering the scene, DTNA is further broadening its commitment to green transportation, following the launch of its electric Freightliner eCascadia last year.

Key Points

  • Primary Recipients: The initial production batch of the eM2 in the U.S. is slated for delivery to several prominent firms, including Ferguson, Hogan Truck Leasing, Inc., Penske Truck Leasing, PITT OHIO, Ryder System, Inc., TITAN Freight Systems, and Velocity Truck Rental & Leasing. Meanwhile, in Canada, Brossard Leasing and Day & Ross will be the first beneficiaries.
  • eM2’s Foundation: The truck stands on the robust Freightliner M2 106 Plus platform and comes after the successful introduction of the electric Freightliner eCascadia in 2022. As of September 2023, DTNA’s eCascadia holds a formidable leadership spot in the Class 8 market.
  • Technical Specs: The eM2 integrates a custom, fully electric Detroit ePowertrain. It is crafted with electric motors and a 2-speed transmission right on the drive axles, ensuring optimal energy utilization. The single-motor variant offers up to 190 continuous horsepower and a typical 180-mile range, while the dual-motor variant gives up to 255 horsepower with a 250-mile range.
  • Safety and Connectivity: Adhering to DTNA’s stringent safety norms, the eM2 comes equipped with an array of safety features, from Active Brake Assist 5 to Lane Departure Warning. Additionally, Detroit Connect provides real-time insights into battery health, charging, and energy consumption, further enhancing the vehicle’s efficiency.

Bottom Line

With the eM2’s launch, Daimler Truck North America fortifies its position in the electric vehicle segment, reflecting its steadfast commitment to sustainability and innovation. The eM2 not only represents a move toward eco-friendly transportation but also promises impressive performance, safety, and connectivity features, setting a new benchmark in the industry.
