Detroit has embarked on a transformative journey toward sustainable transportation with the introduction of its first building-powered curbside electric vehicle (EV) charging stations. Launched by it’s electric, a Brooklyn-based company, this initiative partners with key organizations to enhance EV accessibility across the city, reflecting Detroit’s dedication to innovative mobility solutions.
Key Highlights
- Detroit debuts building-powered EV chargers.
- Partners include Detroit Smart Parking Lab, DTE Energy.
- it’s electric introduces unique charging technology.
- Expansion to 25 locations planned by 2025.
- Offers benefits for drivers and property owners.

This pioneering project, validated in 2022 by the Detroit Smart Parking Lab, involves collaboration with entities like Bedrock, Michigan’s Office of Future Mobility, Michigan Central, Newlab, and DTE Energy. The chargers, initially installed at the Detroit Smart Parking Lab, are set to expand to 25 locations by 2025, driven by community demand and supported by grants from various Michigan-based funds.
The chargers themselves are a standout feature. Designed by it’s electric, these sleek, compact units boast a detachable charging cable—the only such model in the U.S. Installed and maintained at no cost to the city or property owners, they connect directly to building power, bypassing the utility grid. This “behind-the-meter” approach reduces strain on infrastructure and speeds up deployment, making it ideal for urban settings.

For drivers, the system promises convenient, affordable charging. Property owners gain a unique perk: monthly passive income from hosting chargers. The rollout began at 1701 W Lafayette Blvd, with more sites to follow based on resident requests via it’s electric’s waitlist.
Detroit’s initiative underscores its leadership in mobility innovation. By blending cutting-edge technology with public-private partnerships, the city is paving the way for a greener future, with it’s electric at the forefront of this electrification effort.
