April marks the celebration of Drive Electric Earth Month (DEEM), a nationwide initiative aimed at increasing awareness and education about electric vehicles (EVs). With 141 events across 38 states, DEEM offers opportunities for people to test drive EVs, attend workshops, and learn from current EV drivers about the benefits of going electric.

Key Highlights:

  • 141 events in 38 states throughout April
  • Opportunities to test drive EVs and attend educational workshops
  • Organized by Plug In America, Electric Vehicle Association, Sierra Club, Drive Electric USA, and EVHybridNoire
  • Nearly 6.4 million EVs on U.S. roads, with over 1.6 million sold in 2024
  • Federal EV tax credit and long-term savings on maintenance and fuel make now an ideal time to consider an EV
  • High satisfaction among EV drivers, with many planning to purchase another EV

Drive Electric Earth Month, now in its seventh year, is a collaborative effort by several organizations dedicated to promoting the adoption of electric vehicles. Plug In America, a leading nonprofit in EV advocacy, joins forces with the Electric Vehicle Association, Sierra Club, Drive Electric USA, and EVHybridNoire. These groups coordinate with local organizers to host a variety of events across the United States, ranging from test drives to educational sessions.

The events provide hands-on experiences, such as test drives that showcase EV performance, alongside workshops that cover topics like charging options and vehicle maintenance. Attendees can also engage with EV owners to hear firsthand accounts of the cost savings, smoother driving experience, and environmental benefits that come with electric vehicles.

The initiative arrives at a pivotal moment for the EV market. In 2024, over 1.6 million plug-in electric vehicles were sold in the U.S., reflecting an 11% increase from 2023. Today, nearly 6.4 million EVs travel American roads, signaling a growing shift toward sustainable transportation.

Joel Levin, executive director of Plug In America, highlights the current advantages: “Now is the best time to buy or lease an EV. There is more choice in the EV market than ever before, and the federal EV tax credit is in place for now. Besides saving on the initial acquisition with the tax credit, families can save thousands of dollars a year on reduced maintenance and fuel costs by driving electric.” These savings, combined with lower maintenance needs and cheaper charging compared to gasoline, make EVs an appealing option.

Beyond economics, EVs offer a quieter ride, instant torque, and advanced safety features. Public health benefits also arise from reduced emissions. Satisfaction among EV owners remains high, with most surveyed by Plug In America intending to choose another EV for their next vehicle.

Levin invites everyone to join in: “Once you drive electric, you won’t go back. Come out to one of the events, talk to drivers, and experience one for yourself.” DEEM is supported by sponsors including General Motors (platinum), the Electric Vehicle Adoption Leadership program (silver), and Edison International (bronze).
