BAE Systems, a pioneer in electric propulsion, and Eaton, a leader in global power management, are scaling up their joint efforts to enhance electric vehicle (EV) systems for heavy-duty trucks. This partnership aims to enrich the medium- and heavy-duty commercial vehicle markets with state-of-the-art, comprehensive electric solutions. The collaboration now extends to heavier trucks, promising a wider range of zero-emission vehicle platforms.

Key Highlights:

  • Expanded Partnership: Originally focused on medium-duty trucks, BAE Systems and Eaton have broadened their collaboration to include heavy-duty trucks over 19 tons.
  • Integrated EV Systems: Combining BAE Systems’ advanced electric motors and power electronics with Eaton’s heavy-duty 4-speed EV transmissions.
  • Diverse Applications: The systems are designed for various heavy-duty uses, such as delivery trucks, buses, and regional haul trucks.
  • Proven Technology: Both companies bring decades of experience in vehicle electrification, ensuring reliability and high performance.

In 2023, BAE Systems and Eaton strengthened their commitment by signing a memorandum of understanding aimed at developing electric drive technology for heavy-duty trucks. The partnership now offers complete electric drive system solutions that are efficient, advanced, and adaptable.

Bob Lamanna, vice president and general manager of Power & Propulsion Solutions at BAE Systems, emphasized the comprehensive nature of their solutions. “We are combining our expertise and proven technology to provide customers with a complete EV solution,” he stated. This sentiment was echoed by Mark Kramer, business unit director at Eaton’s Vehicle Group, who highlighted the system’s versatility across various vehicle sizes and classes: “By expanding our scope to include more vehicle ratings, our robust system ensures high performance and reliability.”

The collaborative solutions from BAE Systems and Eaton deliver an integrated package that is tailor-made for the demands of the commercial truck market. BAE’s power electronics utilize advanced materials and a modular design, reducing the number of parts needed and enhancing reliability. Eaton’s transmissions are specifically designed to improve the range, grade capability, and acceleration of commercial electric vehicles.

BAE Systems has been at the forefront of electric drive technology for over 25 years, powering a variety of low- and zero-emission vehicles on both land and sea. With over 16,000 propulsion systems deployed worldwide and more than five billion miles of field operation, their technology is a cornerstone in the evolution of electric transportation.

These systems are developed and manufactured in BAE’s facilities located in Endicott, New York; Rochester, UK; and Guaymas, Mexico, demonstrating a global footprint in electric propulsion innovation.
