A leading car manufacturer has significantly reduced its carbon footprint by switching from diesel to electric yard trucks, thanks to a collaboration between TA Dedicated and Orange EV. This initiative not only slashed carbon emissions but also brought about substantial cost savings and operational efficiencies.

Key Highlights

  • Carbon Emission Reduction: The switch to electric yard trucks reduced carbon emissions by 270 metric tons.
  • Cost Savings: The electric trucks saved thousands of dollars in fuel costs.
  • Operational Efficiency: The electric trucks have had no unscheduled downtime, increasing productivity.
  • Driver Satisfaction: Drivers reported a smoother ride and better working conditions with the electric trucks.

The shift to electric yard trucks has transformed the car manufacturer’s yard operations. Deployed at three of its busiest parts distribution centers, the electric trucks, supplied by Orange EV, handle the demanding task of moving trailers throughout the day. This change has delivered both environmental and economic benefits.

A standout advantage is the reduction in carbon emissions. By adopting electric trucks, the manufacturer has prevented 270 metric tons of CO2 from entering the atmosphere, aligning with its sustainability goals. Beyond environmental gains, the switch has cut fuel costs significantly, saving thousands of dollars since the trucks run on electricity rather than diesel.

Operationally, the electric trucks outperform their diesel predecessors. With no unscheduled downtime—unlike diesel trucks, which can face up to 20% downtime due to maintenance, according to Orange EV’s Kurt Neutgens—these vehicles charge during breaks and overnight, ensuring constant readiness. TA Dedicated’s Robert Doxsee highlighted their quick response and instant braking, boosting yard productivity.

Drivers also benefit from quieter, cleaner trucks. Anthony Toter from TA Dedicated noted that drivers enjoy a smoother ride and can now listen to the radio, a stark contrast to the noisy diesel models. Despite challenges like upfront costs and infrastructure needs, TA Dedicated simplifies the transition for the manufacturer.

Looking forward, TA Dedicated is exploring a regional electric vehicle program in Texas, reinforcing the manufacturer’s commitment to sustainability. This collaboration showcases how electric yard trucks can drive environmental and operational success.
