Over 30,000 kilometers, two continents, and one groundbreaking feat: Chris and Julie Ramsey have officially completed the world’s first pole-to-pole journey in an electric vehicle. Their Arctic Sea to South Pole odyssey in a Nissan Ariya has not only pushed the boundaries of EV technology but also ignited global interest in sustainable mobility.
This 10-month, 30,000-kilometer expedition started in March 2023 at the 1823 Magnetic North Pole. From the frozen Arctic, the Ramseys braved the diverse landscapes of North, Central, and South America before reaching the desolate beauty of Antarctica. This unprecedented drive is a testament to the resilience of both the adventurers and their trusty Nissan Ariya.
Uncharted Territory for EVs
This wasn’t just a sightseeing trip; it was a rigorous test drive for electric vehicles in extreme conditions. The Ariya, equipped with e-4ORCE all-wheel control and modified by Arctic Trucks for polar terrain, faced unforgiving challenges: scorching deserts, treacherous mountain passes, and bone-chilling Antarctic temperatures. Yet, the factory-standard powertrain and battery, with modifications only to accommodate 39-inch tires, proved their mettle.

More Than Just a Drive
The Ramseys’ vision for Pole to Pole extended beyond personal accomplishment. They aimed to spark global EV adoption and leave a lasting legacy of charging infrastructure. Inspired by their 2017 Mongol Rally adventure in a Nissan LEAF, they saw the power of epic journeys to capture imaginations and pave the way for a greener future.
Through collaboration with innovative partners, Chris and Julie transformed Pole to Pole into a movement. Their passion inspired thousands of supporters and contributors who shared their belief in the potential of electric cars.
Reaching Millions, One Wheel Turn at a Time
The impact of Pole to Pole is undeniable. Chris and Julie’s journey resonated with millions across the globe, captivating audiences with tales of breathtaking landscapes, technological triumphs, and unwavering determination. Their message – that electric vehicles are not just viable but exhilarating – is a powerful catalyst for change.
As Allyson Witherspoon, Corporate vice president, Nissan Global Marketing, Brand and Merchandizing, aptly stated, “Pole to Pole has shown how Nissan’s innovative technology delivers excitement, whether on a trip to the office or to the Antarctic!”
The Ramseys’ historic feat is a monumental milestone for electric vehicles, proving their capability to handle even the most extreme conditions. More importantly, it’s a testament to the power of human ingenuity and collaboration in shaping a more sustainable future. As Chris and Julie stand at the South Pole, their journey serves as a beacon of hope, reminding us that even the most ambitious dreams can be electrifyingly possible.
