Magna Launches DHD REX Range-Extender Hybrid Drive

Magna's DHD REX single-motor hybrid drive targets the growing REEV market with a modular, multi-mode system scalable across vehicle segments and global platforms.

Magna has introduced the DHD REX, a single-motor dedicated hybrid drive designed for range-extended electric vehicles (REEVs). The system uses a modular architecture that supports electric driving, a generating mode for range extension, and an optional parallel hybrid mode. It targets B- through E-segment vehicles in AWD layouts and is designed for integration across both ICE-based and BEV platforms.

Highlights

  • Single-motor architecture reduces system cost and complexity compared to Magna’s existing dual-motor DHD Duo, which is already in series production
  • Three operating modes include pure electric driving, generating mode for range extension, and optional parallel hybrid for highway performance
  • Scalable across segments from B through E, including SUVs, with adaptability to varying regional regulatory requirements
  • Platform-agnostic integration supports packaging across both ICE-based and BEV architectures

Addressing the Range-Extension Market

As automakers work to balance EV performance with broader market versatility, range-extended architectures have gained traction. Magna positions the DHD REX as a response to that demand, offering OEMs a ready-to-integrate system with multiple drivetrain modes.

Diba Ilunga, President of Magna Powertrain, said the system reflects the company’s focus on flexible electrification pathways. “DHD REX reflects our commitment to adaptable, customer-focused solutions that support a wide range of performance and market expectations,” Ilunga said.

Technical Architecture

The DHD REX is built on a single-motor layout, which Magna says reduces size, weight, and overall system cost while maintaining validated efficiency. The compact design simplifies packaging for OEMs and supports easier adaptation across platforms.

The system complements the DHD Duo, Magna’s dual e-motor dedicated hybrid drive already in production. However, the single-motor configuration targets applications where cost and packaging constraints take priority over the dual-motor layout’s capabilities.

Core Capabilities

  • Architecture & Efficiency — Smaller footprint and lower system cost with validated efficiency targets
  • Operating Modes — Electric drive, generating mode, and optional parallel hybrid mode
  • Scalability — Validated for B through E segments in AWD configurations, including SUVs
  • Integration — Modular design compatible with ICE-based and BEV platforms across global markets
