The kit weighs only 100kg more than the original internal combustion engine (ICE) version, with an overall weight of around 1100kg. Electrogenic’s clever engineering and use of OEM-grade components maintain the MX-5’s weight distribution, while improving its power-to-weight ratio by 21%. The EV conversion kit offers 160bhp (120kW), and thanks to instant torque, the electrified MX-5 accelerates from 0-60 mph in approximately 6 seconds, with a top speed of 115 mph—similar to the original ICE model.

Electrogenic’s EV kit for the Mazda MX-5 joins the company’s growing range of conversion solutions, which already include options for the DeLorean DMC-12, Jaguar E-Type, Porsche 911, and classic Mini, among others. These kits are offered worldwide through Electrogenic’s vetted installer network and are designed to be easy to install and fully reversible.

Steve Drummond, CEO of Electrogenic, stated: “We’re delighted to introduce the latest addition to our world-leading range of ‘plug-and-play’ EV conversion kits. We’ve long been intrigued by the concept of a light, well-balanced, rear-wheel-drive electrified modern-classic, one that truly delivers when it comes to the old-school thrill of driving. It seems we weren’t alone, as we’ve received a great deal of interest in the idea of an MX-5 conversion over the years. It’s exciting to finally reveal our creation to the world and give MX-5 fans the chance to electrify one of the most popular sports cars in history.”

Electrogenic is renowned for its pioneering EV powertrain technology, which is used to future-proof classic cars for low-carbon motoring. The company also offers bespoke EV conversions, such as the electrification of Jason Momoa’s 1929 Rolls-Royce Phantom II—one of their most complex projects to date. Additionally, Electrogenic provides turn-key EV powertrain solutions for low-volume car manufacturers and defense industry applications.

The lightweight EV kit for the MX-5 is engineered for ease of installation and can be fitted by a trained mechanic within just a few days. Using CAD modeling and clever packaging, the Electrogenic team has precisely tailored the kit to fit the MX-5’s existing structure. The kit packages 42kWh of OEM-grade batteries, providing a range of over 150 miles, with the ability to CCS rapid charge in just one hour. To maintain the MX-5’s dynamic handling characteristics, the batteries are installed under the bonnet and in the rear, keeping the center of gravity low.

The kit is equipped with a compact, power-dense motor and a single-speed, fixed-ratio gearbox that delivers 160bhp and 2,500Nm of torque to the rear wheels. The selectable driving profiles—Eco and Sport—allow drivers to optimize the vehicle’s performance, energy efficiency, and regenerative braking levels. The carefully calibrated brake regen system further enhances the driving experience.

Electrogenic’s expertise in developing sophisticated EV solutions extends beyond conversion kits. The company recently launched a full EV integration technology suite that includes Vehicle Control Units (VCU), specialist electronics for body control, driver interface, and energy management. Their in-house developed software and integration technology ensure that all EV powertrain components work in harmony, providing a driving experience that feels as refined as a factory-built electric vehicle.

Steve Drummond concludes: “The MX-5, or Miata, is celebrated as a global automotive icon, with legions of fans all over the world, so we’ve taken our time developing the range of EV conversion kits for it. We wanted to get this package just right. We’ve been careful to ensure that the kits are well judged in terms of performance, to thrill and delight without intimidating—while preserving the inherent lightweight, RWD character of the car.”

Electrogenic’s conversion kits are manufactured and assembled in the UK, and the company’s ‘plug-and-play’ electrification solutions are offered internationally through an expanding network of vetted partners. Electrogenic’s commitment to quality engineering, proprietary technology, and maintaining the spirit of classic vehicles ensures that enthusiasts can continue to enjoy their beloved cars well into the future—now with zero tailpipe emissions.
