Exyte Earns Diamond Award for CATL Gigafactory

Exyte, a global leader in designing and delivering ultra-clean, sustainable facilities, has been honored with the Facility Diamond Partner Award from Contemporary Amperex Technology Co. Limited (CATL) for its role in constructing CATL’s first large-scale battery cell manufacturing facility outside China, located in Arnstadt, Germany. This milestone project, managed by CATL’s German entity, Contemporary Amperex Technology Thuringia GmbH (CATT), underscores Exyte’s expertise in high-tech industries and its commitment to advancing sustainable manufacturing solutions.

Key Highlights

  • Award Recognition: Exyte received the Facility Diamond Partner Award for its leadership in delivering CATL’s Arnstadt gigafactory.
  • First Outside China: The facility is CATL’s first major battery cell production site outside China and a pioneering Chinese industrial project in Germany.
  • Europe’s Largest Dry Room: The plant features one of Europe’s largest dry rooms, critical for battery cell production due to its low-humidity environment.
  • Sustainability Focus: The facility incorporates waste heat recovery and water recycling systems to minimize environmental impact.
  • Strategic Milestone: The project positions Exyte as a key player in Europe’s growing battery production sector.

A Landmark Project for Battery Manufacturing

Exyte joined the CATL project in 2019, navigating Germany’s evolving regulatory landscape for battery cell production. In collaboration with CATT, Exyte helped establish standards for this emerging industry in Europe. The Arnstadt facility began test production in December 2022, with full production tests completed by the end of 2024. This technically complex project required Exyte’s integrated expertise in engineering, procurement, construction, and commissioning.

The facility includes one of Europe’s largest dry rooms, spanning the size of several football fields. This dry room, the largest ever built by Exyte, ensures the ultra-low humidity environment essential for battery cell manufacturing. Exyte’s ability to deliver such advanced infrastructure highlights its global leadership in creating ultra-clean production environments.

Sustainability at the Core

Sustainability was a priority from the project’s design phase. Exyte incorporated waste heat recovery and water recycling systems to reduce the facility’s environmental footprint. The engineering team tailored the plant to meet the specific demands of battery cell production, ensuring safe handling of sensitive chemicals and compliance with strict environmental regulations. These efforts align with the industry’s push toward e-mobility and climate neutrality, supporting Europe’s transition to a sustainable future.

Mark Garvey, Exyte’s Executive Board Member and CEO of Advanced Technology Facilities, emphasized the project’s significance: “The CATT facility is a remarkable achievement. The successful project shows how strong partnerships turn bold ideas into real-world outcomes, driving innovation, economic growth, and the transition to a more sustainable future.”

Strengthening Partnerships and Industry Leadership

The Facility Diamond Partner Award was presented during a ceremony recognizing the contributions of CATL’s partners. Songyan Du, Head of Procurement at CATT, praised Exyte’s collaborative spirit and dedication, expressing enthusiasm for continued cooperation to address challenges in e-mobility and climate neutrality in Germany.

This project positions Exyte as a strategic partner in Europe’s expanding battery production sector, which is expected to grow significantly through 2030. Exyte is already working on additional facilities for major players in the automotive and battery industries, further solidifying its role in advancing next-generation battery manufacturing technologies.
