Ford Adjusts F-150 Lightning Production

Ford Motor Company, in a significant strategic shift, has announced a reduction in the production of the F-150 Lightning, the top-selling electric pickup in the United States. This move is part of Ford’s broader strategy to maintain a balanced production line that aligns with market demand and profitability goals.

Despite reducing its focus on the F-150 Lightning, Ford remains committed to the electric vehicle (EV) market. The company anticipates continued growth in global EV sales into 2024, albeit at a slower pace than previously expected. Ford is gearing up for the launch of its next-generation electric vehicles, signaling a continued investment in the EV sector.

Jim Farley, Ford President and CEO, highlighted the company’s strategic approach. “We are taking advantage of our manufacturing flexibility to offer customers choices while balancing our growth and profitability. Customers love the F-150 Lightning, America’s best-selling EV pickup,” Farley said. He further emphasized Ford’s vision for EVs, particularly with the impending introduction of advanced digital electric vehicles and a partnership for accessing Tesla’s charging network.

The adjustment in the F-150 Lightning’s production will have a notable impact on Ford’s workforce. Approximately 1,400 employees at the Rouge Electric Vehicle Center will be affected as the facility shifts to a single-shift operation beginning April 1. Of these, around 700 employees will be reassigned to the Michigan Assembly Plant, with others receiving placements within Southeast Michigan facilities or opting for the Special Retirement Incentive Program under the 2023 Ford-UAW contract.

Despite the scaling back of the F-150 Lightning, Ford continues to advance in the electric vehicle market. The company’s decision reflects a strategic balance between embracing innovative electric technology and responding to the dynamic demands of the global automotive market.
