The international left-hand-drive Freelander 8 pairs a 2.0-liter turbocharged hybrid engine with a 34.12 kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery for 460 kW (617 hp) of peak output and 68 miles (110 km) of all-electric range, according to Freelander. The brand, jointly developed by JLR and Chery, detailed the powertrain, battery, chassis and all-terrain hardware this week, following the model’s unveiling at its Global Brand Launch in Abu Dhabi late last month. The company says the figures apply to the Middle East market model only and that specifications vary by market and trim.
Highlights
- Output: 460 kW (617 hp) and 488 lb-ft (662 N·m) of peak torque, with 0–62 mph (0–100 km/h) in 5.8 seconds, per the company
- Range: 551 miles (886 km) total and 68 miles (110 km) all-electric on the combined cycle
- Charging: 11 kW AC, plus DC fast charging from 20% to 80% in 20 minutes or less
- Off-road: 10.5 inches (266 mm) of maximum ground clearance and wading depth up to 35.4 inches (900 mm)

Freelander 8 PHEV Powertrain and Battery
The Middle East model combines Freelander’s 2.0T Dedicated Hybrid Engine with the 34.12 kWh LFP pack and dual-motor all-wheel drive. The company reports total range of 551 miles (886 km) with a full tank and fully charged battery, and electric-only range of 68 miles (110 km). Both figures are measured on the combined cycle. Freelander notes that actual range varies with driving conditions and use.
How Does the Freelander 8 Handle Off-Road Terrain?
The chassis uses dual-chamber air suspension with Continuously Controlled Damping (CCD). Adjustable ride height and damping are designed to support ride comfort on pavement and clearance over uneven ground.
Traction management runs through two systems:
- All-Terrain Dual Lock System: Combines a Virtual Central Differential Lock with an Electronic Limited-Slip Differential (e-LSD) to manage torque distribution on low-grip surfaces and in cross-axle conditions.
- i-ATS (Intelligent All-Terrain System): Offers nine modes — seven terrain programs, including Sand Mode, plus Smart Mode and Expert Mode — working with the electrified powertrain and chassis.
Under the relevant test conditions, the company says the Freelander 8 can pass a 31.5-inch (800 mm) cross-axle test, climb a 70% gradient (approximately 35 degrees), and wade through water up to 35.4 inches (900 mm) deep. Freelander states that off-road and wading capability remains subject to the vehicle’s operating limits and appropriate driving conditions.

Freelander 8 International Rollout Plan
Freelander describes the Middle East as its strategic starting point for international expansion. The rollout will proceed in stages, beginning with left-hand-drive markets before expanding to right-hand-drive and EU-specification markets.
The international left-hand-drive variant is scheduled to make its dynamic debut at the 2026 Chery International User Summit in Wuhu later this month.
