General Motors (GM) has signed its largest renewable energy purchase agreement to date with NorthStar Clean Energy, a unit of CMS Energy. The 15-year deal will provide renewable electricity for three key assembly plants, supporting GM’s goal to achieve carbon neutrality by 2040. The energy will come from NorthStar’s Newport Solar project in Arkansas, which has a capacity of 180 megawatts, enough to power 30,000 homes annually.

This agreement marks a significant milestone in GM’s journey towards sustainability. As of 2022, the company secured the energy sourcing agreements needed to achieve 100% renewable energy for all U.S. sites by 2025. With 17 renewable energy plants across 11 states, GM has become the automotive industry’s largest buyer of renewable power by capacity.
