Harbinger, a top medium-duty electric vehicle (EV) company, has launched the IRA Risk-Free Guarantee to keep prices steady for buyers despite changes in EV tax rules. This program tackles uncertainty around the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) 45W Commercial Clean Vehicle Credit, which gives up to $40,000 per EV to update commercial fleets. With this guarantee, Harbinger ensures customers get a discount similar to the tax credit, keeping electric trucks as affordable as diesel ones—no matter what happens to the federal incentive.
Key Highlights
- Lower upfront costs: Buyers get a credit right away, cutting the initial price of the vehicle.
- Price parity with diesel: Harbinger’s EVs match diesel vehicle prices, making the switch easier.
- Protection from tax changes: If the IRA credit ends, Harbinger waives a second payment to keep costs low.
- Boosts EV adoption: Removes money worries, helping more businesses go electric.
How It Works
The IRA Risk-Free Guarantee lowers the starting price of Harbinger’s electric trucks. Take the model S524, a Class 5 chassis with a 140 kWh battery and an MSRP of $103,200. Buyers get a $12,900 credit at purchase, dropping the cost to $90,300—equal to a typical diesel chassis price. If the IRA tax credit stays active for 2025, buyers pay Harbinger back the $12,900 later. If the credit is canceled, Harbinger skips that second payment, locking in the lower price.
“We created this program to eliminate the financial uncertainty for customers who are interested in EV adoption, but are concerned about the future of the IRA tax credit,” said John Harris, Co-founder and CEO of Harbinger. “For electric vehicles to go mainstream, they must be cost-competitive with diesel vehicles. While the IRA tax credit helps bridge that gap, we remain committed to price parity with diesel, even if the credit disappears. Our vertically integrated approach enables us to keep costs low, shields us from tariff volatility, and ensures long-term price stability for our customers.”
Harbinger’s Innovation
Harbinger’s electric chassis is built for medium-duty uses like vans, box trucks, RVs, and emergency vehicles. Made in-house—including the battery and drive unit—it offers better quality and safety than retrofitted diesel models. This U.S.-made design also supports local jobs. Recently, Harbinger secured 4,690 pre-orders worth $500 million and raised $100 million in Series B funding. This cash helps ramp up production and keep prices competitive through smart manufacturing investments.
