Honda Civic Hybrid Wins U.S. News Best Compact Hybrid Car for 2026

The 2026 Honda Civic hybrid has been named Best Compact Hybrid Car by U.S. News & World Report, with editors recommending both sedan and hatchback against a 138-vehicle field.

The 2026 Honda Civic hybrid has been named “Best Compact Hybrid Car” in U.S. News & World Report’s 2026 Best Hybrid and Electric Cars Awards. The publication’s editors recommended both the sedan and hatchback body styles, citing the model’s combination of performance, interior space, fuel economy, and safety. The award marks the latest in a string of recent honors for the 11th-generation Civic, which earlier this year took the Edmunds Top Rated Car Award for the fourth time.

Highlights

  • 2026 Civic hybrid wins U.S. News “Best Compact Hybrid Car” against a field of 138 evaluated hybrids, PHEVs, and EVs
  • Average transaction price of $30,800 sits roughly $14,900 below the industry’s $45,700 new-vehicle average
  • Two-motor hybrid powertrain produces 200 horsepower and 232 lb-ft of torque, with a 50-mpg city EPA rating
  • Honda recorded the highest fleet-average fuel economy among full-line automakers in the EPA’s 2025 Automotive Trends Report

How the Award Was Decided

To select winners across the program’s categories, U.S. News evaluated 138 luxury and mainstream hybrid, plug-in hybrid, and electric models spanning cars, SUVs, and trucks. The evaluation drew on EPA fuel economy and range data, transaction pricing, and aggregated automotive press reviews, with winners chosen for quality, efficiency, and value within their respective segments.

The Civic hybrid took the compact hybrid category outright. It is the second consecutive year the model has been recognized in the U.S. News awards program after securing a “Best New Car for Teens” designation in 2025.

Pricing and Market Position

Honda reports an average Civic hybrid transaction price of $30,800, against an industry-wide new-vehicle average of $45,700. The roughly $14,900 gap places the model well below mainstream pricing despite its hybrid powertrain, a positioning Honda has emphasized as it expands electrified offerings across the lineup.

The Civic remains the best-selling compact car in the U.S. since 1973, according to data from WardsAuto, and ranks at the top of the segment among Gen Z and first-time buyers based on Strategic Vision’s New Vehicle Experience Study covering 2021 through 2025.

Powertrain and Performance

The Civic hybrid uses Honda’s fourth-generation two-motor hybrid-electric system, which earned a Wards 10 Best Engines & Propulsion Systems award. The setup pairs a 2.0-liter Atkinson-cycle four-cylinder with two electric motors for a combined 200 horsepower and 232 lb-ft of torque, making the Civic hybrid the most powerful non-Type R Civic to date.

EPA fuel economy reaches 50 mpg in the city for Civic Sedan Sport and Sport Touring hybrid trims. The system gives the model quick acceleration and refined hybrid-to-engine handoff, while preserving passenger and cargo space.

Honda’s Fuel Economy Position

Honda was identified as the full-line automaker with the highest fleet-average fuel economy in the EPA’s 2025 Automotive Trends Report. The company’s electrified lineup, which represented nearly a third of total U.S. sales in 2025, includes the all-electric Prologue SUV; hybrid-electric Civic, Accord, CR-V, and Prelude; and the fuel-cell-electric CR-V e:FCEV.

The Civic hybrid was named the 2025 North American Car of the Year, giving the Civic nameplate a record-setting fourth NACOTY win — more than any other model in the award’s three-decade history.
