Horse Powertrain has officially revealed a new, fully integrated hybrid powertrain system, the HR18 HEV. The announcement marks the debut of the first complete powertrain unit designed, developed, and produced entirely under the Horse Powertrain brand. Developed by its Horse Technologies division, the system is engineered to be a versatile and scalable solution for Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) worldwide.

Key Highlights

  • Horse Powertrain has launched its new integrated HR18 HEV hybrid powertrain.
  • The system combines a new 1.8L ‘HR18’ engine, a DB45S transmission, a 1.4kWh battery, and a 50kW electric motor.
  • The powertrain was developed to provide OEMs with a high-performance, easy-to-implement hybrid solution to meet growing market demand.
  • Production of the HR18 engine has commenced at the company’s facilities in Valladolid, Spain, and Bursa, Türkiye.

An Advanced, Integrated Powertrain

The HR18 HEV consolidates the company’s key technologies into a single, efficient unit that merges a combustion engine, electric motor, transmission, and power electronics. This integration was handled end-to-end by Horse Technologies’ R&D teams in Romania and Spain.

According to Horse Powertrain CEO Matias Giannini, the system directly addresses the challenges facing auto manufacturers. “By solving the major challenges involved in producing and integrating such a high-performance system, we’re freeing up our OEM partners to focus on their priority innovations and areas of differentiation,” Giannini stated.

Component Specifications

At the heart of the new hybrid system is the ‘HR18’ combustion engine, a new 1.8L, 4-cylinder gasoline direct injection engine. The Atkinson-cycle engine was built specifically for hybrid applications, weighs just 100kg, and delivers up to 80kW (108PS) of power and 172Nm of torque. Importantly, it complies with both Euro 6E-BIS and Euro 7 emissions standards.

The system’s other core components include:

  • BTA Gen2 Battery: A compact, 36kg lithium-ion battery that stores 1.4kWh of energy. It features an integrated cooling system within its two modules of 34 cells.
  • DB45S Transmission: A clutchless gearbox capable of handling a maximum torque of 436Nm, manufactured in Seville, Spain.
  • 5DH Electric Motor: Produced in Aveiro, Portugal, this motor provides a peak power output of 50kW and 212Nm of torque.

Patrice Haettel, CEO of Horse Technologies, noted that the HR18 HEV is the result of collaboration across the company’s European network. He added that it “reflects our team’s unwavering commitment to delivering a complete range of propulsion solutions.”
