Allison Transmission has partnered with Southwest Research Institute (SwRI) to equip a hydrogen-fueled internal combustion engine (H2-ICE) truck, unveiled at SAE International’s COMVEC. The truck demonstrates superior emissions control, surpassing U.S. and European standards for emissions. The Allison 4000 Series™ transmission plays a critical role in enhancing the performance and sustainability of this hydrogen-powered vehicle.
Key Highlights:
- Allison 4000 Series™ transmission is integrated into the H2-ICE truck showcased at COMVEC.
- Hydrogen Internal Combustion Engine (H2-ICE) surpasses EPA/CARB 2027 and Euro 7 emissions standards.
- Allison transmissions are fuel-agnostic, compatible with various fuel sources, including hydrogen.
- Power shift technology and torque converter enhance performance, improving startability, drivability, and overall productivity.
- 99.7% reduction in CO2 emissions is achieved compared to traditional diesel engines, qualifying as Zero CO2 Emissions Vehicles under future standards.
- SwRI’s H2-ICE Consortium aims to decarbonize the transportation industry through hydrogen-powered internal combustion engines.
The truck was first revealed at the 2024 ACT Expo in Las Vegas and is part of a broader H2-ICE Consortium led by SwRI. This consortium, which includes major engine and truck manufacturers, explores the potential of hydrogen-fueled internal combustion engines as a key tool for decarbonizing the transportation sector. With a 99.7% reduction in CO2 emissions, H2-ICE vehicles meet future zero-emission standards in both the U.S. and Europe, paving the way for more sustainable transportation solutions.
Allison Transmission’s fully automatic transmissions are fuel-agnostic, meaning they are compatible with a variety of energy sources, including gasoline, propane, natural gas, and hydrogen. This flexibility helps companies meet their sustainability goals while maintaining performance and reliability.
