Hyundai and Michelin Advance Next-Generation Tire R&D

Hyundai Motor Group and Michelin have signed a third MOU to co-develop advanced tire technologies, focusing on EV performance, low rolling resistance, and virtual development systems for future mobility.

Hyundai Motor Group has solidified its commitment to tire innovation by signing a third memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Michelin. This agreement builds upon previous collaborations from 2017 and 2022 to drive advancements in the future mobility market.

Highlights

  • Partnership focuses on extreme-low rolling resistance and high-performance EV tires.
  • Agreement expands virtual development for off-road and SmartGrip braking technologies.
  • Collaboration builds upon successful joint projects established in 2017 and 2022.

Strategic R&D Objectives

Under this new three-year framework, the companies will target specific engineering milestones. The joint research and development efforts will focus on several key areas to meet evolving industry standards:

  • Efficiency and Safety: Developing extreme-low rolling resistance tires for fuel economy and high-performance tires for improved handling.
  • Premium EV Solutions: Enhancing tire specifications to meet the high load, extended range, and safety demands of premium electric vehicles.
  • Virtual Development: Establishing a virtual tire development system specifically for off-road applications to streamline testing.
  • SmartGrip Technology: Advancing proprietary technology to optimize braking performance and overall efficiency.

Addressing Future Mobility Demands

The initiative aims to solve technical challenges posed by electric and autonomous vehicles. These platforms require tires capable of supporting higher load capacities while maintaining driving dynamics and environmental sustainability.

Yongsuk Shin, Vice President and Head of Genesis Engineering Design Center at Hyundai Motor Group, emphasized the strategic value of the alliance. Shin noted that leveraging the specialized capabilities of both entities will yield advanced solutions for the market.

Building on Proven Success

This latest agreement is an extension of a proven track record between the automotive giant and the tire manufacturer. The initial 2017 MOU was instrumental in developing tire specifications for the Hyundai IONIQ 5.

The subsequent 2022 agreement resulted in measurable progress regarding tire wear prediction and braking enhancements. Both companies intend to utilize these foundational achievements to accelerate the delivery of breakthrough technologies.
