Hyundai Mobis, a prominent automotive supplier, has unveiled a pioneering battery system for electric vehicles (EVs) equipped with a built-in fire extinguishing feature. This advanced technology is designed to boost EV safety by tackling thermal runaway, a dangerous process where heat from a malfunctioning battery cell spreads, risking fires or explosions.

Key Highlights

  • Early Fire Suppression: Extinguishes fires within five minutes of ignition using a specialized agent.
  • Prevention of Thermal Runaway: Stops heat from spreading to nearby cells, halting escalation.
  • Global Safety Standards: Meets and exceeds tightening regulations in Europe, China, and India.
  • Patent Applications: Three patents filed, covering battery case and extinguishing device designs.
  • Additional Innovations: Developing an anti-overheating material for enhanced safety.

Hyundai Mobis’s Battery System Assembly (BSA) combines hardware and software for a robust safety solution. It includes a Battery Management System (BMS), a fire extinguishing device with five times the capacity of a standard 3.3-kilogram home extinguisher, and a custom battery case. The agent is eco-friendly, safe for humans, and excels in cooling, insulation, and penetration.

Sophisticated software monitors temperature, voltage, and pressure in real time. Upon detecting an issue, it targets the problem area with the extinguishing agent, offering a proactive edge over traditional delay-focused methods. The company has filed three patents for this system, underscoring its innovative design.

As global regulators demand prevention over delay of thermal runaway, Hyundai Mobis’s technology aligns with emerging standards, potentially redefining industry benchmarks. This is critical as EVs evolve with longer ranges and faster charging.

Beyond this system, Hyundai Mobis is advancing a pulsating heat pipe made of aluminum alloy and refrigerant to manage heat during rapid charging, enhancing battery reliability.

Park Yong Jun, Vice President of Battery System R&D at Hyundai Mobis, stated, “As safety standards for battery systems grow stricter, we aim to develop advanced solutions that exceed global expectations.”

This breakthrough positions Hyundai Mobis as a leader in EV safety, addressing a key industry challenge. As EV adoption rises, such innovations ensure safer, more reliable vehicles.
