Suzuki Motor Corporation has marked a significant milestone in India’s automotive sector by initiating the dispatch of its first battery electric vehicle, the e VITARA, along with batteries for strong hybrid vehicles. This development underscores Suzuki’s commitment to advancing sustainable mobility in India, where the company has been a key player for over four decades.

- Ceremony Attendees: The event featured prominent figures including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Gujarat State Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel, Ambassador of Japan to India Keiichi Ono, and Suzuki’s Representative Director and President Toshihiro Suzuki, with around 600 participants from government and company representatives.
- Production Location: The e VITARA is manufactured at Suzuki’s Gujarat Plant, emphasizing local production under the ‘Make in India’ initiative.
- Export Plans: Vehicles will be exported to over 100 countries and regions worldwide, including Europe and Japan, shipping from Pipavav port in Gujarat.
- Battery Manufacturing: Lithium-ion batteries for hybrid models are produced at TDS Lithium-Ion Battery Gujarat Private Limited (TDSG), a joint venture supporting eco-friendly vehicles.
- Vehicle Features: The e VITARA boasts an “Emotional Versatile Cruiser” concept, combining advanced technology with strength, a nimble BEV powertrain, electric 4WD system “ALLGRIP-e,” and a dedicated BEV platform “HEARTECT-e.”
- Hybrid Battery Expansion: TDSG batteries are installed in the Grand Vitara and planned for other models, building on production that has already supported over 1 million vehicles since 2021.
Suzuki’s Indian subsidiary, Maruti Suzuki India Limited, oversees the dispatch of this global strategic BEV. The e VITARA represents Suzuki’s entry into the electric vehicle market, designed to appeal to consumers seeking versatility and performance. Its powertrain ensures a sharp driving experience, while the ALLGRIP-e system enhances off-road capability and overall power, making it suitable for diverse terrains. The specialized HEARTECT-e platform optimizes the vehicle for battery electric operations, focusing on efficiency and safety.
In parallel, TDSG has commenced production of batteries for strong hybrid vehicles. Established in 2017 by Suzuki, Toshiba Corporation, and Denso Corporation, TDSG aims to provide a stable supply of automotive lithium-ion batteries within India. As the country’s first facility to produce such batteries from the cell level, it promotes environmentally friendly transportation. Initially focusing on mild hybrid vehicles in 2021, TDSG has expanded to strong hybrids, contributing significantly to India’s green mobility goals.
Representative Director and President Toshihiro Suzuki expressed gratitude for the support, noting the honor of high-level attendance at the ceremony. He highlighted how the Gujarat facility will manufacture the e VITARA for global markets and how TDSG’s batteries align with ‘Make in India.’ Suzuki reaffirmed its long-term partnership in India’s mobility evolution, pledging continued contributions to sustainable development and innovation in the automotive industry.
