Intelligent power management company Eaton and EV charging specialist AMP IT SA are collaborating on an innovative project in Switzerland. The partnership introduces an EV Charging-as-a-Service model for building owners, integrating on-site solar power and energy storage. This initiative allows owners of multi-residential, office, industrial, and logistics buildings to provide robust EV charging without the complexities of owning and operating the necessary infrastructure.

Key Highlights

  • Eaton and AMP IT have launched a new EV Charging-as-a-Service model in Switzerland.
  • The project aims for a 30% boost in the use of on-site solar energy for charging electric vehicles.
  • Building owners can offer EV charging solutions without the financial burden of owning or maintaining the assets.
  • The initiative is designed to decrease strain on the electrical grid, contributing to greater energy stability and security.

A Simplified Approach to EV Infrastructure

This collaboration leverages Eaton’s Buildings as a Grid approach, which treats buildings as central energy hubs that can both consume and contribute power. Combined with AMP IT’s smart charging solutions, this strategy enables the seamless management of a building’s renewable and traditional energy sources.

The “as-a-service” model means that Eaton and AMP IT handle the financing, installation, and operation of the EV charging systems, solar panels, and energy storage. This removes a significant barrier for property owners, who can now offer advanced charging amenities without the associated capital investment and maintenance responsibilities. Potential cost savings from on-site energy generation could also lead to lower charging prices for EV drivers.

An Award-Winning, Collaborative Effort

The project’s innovative approach has earned recognition and support from the Swiss Federal Office of Energy through its RechargeAuPoint program. This endorsement highlights the national importance of developing advanced charging infrastructure.

The initiative brings together an extensive ecosystem of partners coordinated by AMP IT. This network includes real estate investment funds, experienced service operators, energy and construction companies, local utilities, and academic institutions. All partners are aligned on the transformative potential of leveraging buildings as key components of localized microgrids. Future plans include rolling out similar business models in other countries across Europe, the Middle East, and Africa.

“Decentralized energy production and management is essential to meet growing global energy demands,” said Andreea Laplace, director of sustainability and energy transition offerings at Eaton. “This project shows how collaboration and technology developments such as our Buildings as a Grid approach will make the energy transition sustainable and profitable for everyone involved.”

Ilya Tyuvildin, co-founder of AMP IT, added, “We trust that this program will bring significant contributions to e-mobility with smarter EV charging solutions making better use of locally produced renewable energies, enhanced energy self-consumption schemes, and cost-effective battery storage solutions.”
