J.B. Hunt Transport Services Inc., a leading supply chain solutions provider, has announced the addition of 20 Nikola Tre fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEVs) to its fleet. These zero-emission vehicles will be used primarily along the West Coast to assist customers in achieving their sustainability objectives. The addition of the Nikola FCEVs aligns with J.B. Hunt’s long-term strategy to reduce carbon emissions and expand its alternative-powered fleet, which already includes battery-electric and renewable natural gas-powered vehicles.

Key Highlights:

  • Expanded fleet: J.B. Hunt has added 20 Nikola Tre FCEVs, bolstering its sustainability offerings.
  • West Coast operations: The new vehicles will mainly be used for intermodal and drayage transport in California.
  • Regulatory compliance: The FCEVs will help J.B. Hunt’s customers meet environmental regulations from the California Air Resources Board (CARB) and the WAIRE program.
  • Part of a larger strategy: This move is part of J.B. Hunt’s effort to reduce its carbon emission intensity by 32% by 2034, using 2019 as a baseline.
  • Nikola HYLA support: Fueling and infrastructure for the FCEVs will be provided by Nikola’s HYLA brand.

J.B. Hunt’s sustainability strategy continues to evolve, as the company actively explores alternative fuels and technologies to improve environmental performance. In addition to incorporating Nikola FCEVs, J.B. Hunt is running a pilot program with Clean Energy, testing RNG-powered vehicles like the new Cummins X15N engine. J.B. Hunt has also worked with major clients such as Daimler Truck North America and Electrolux to integrate alternative-powered vehicles into their operations.

As part of its overall mission, J.B. Hunt is committed to expanding the use of biogenic fuels and improving fuel efficiency. These initiatives are key to meeting its goal of reducing carbon emissions intensity by 32% by 2034, a goal the company has already made significant progress toward, surpassing the halfway mark last year.

Sustainability Solutions for Customers

J.B. Hunt provides a variety of options to help customers reduce their carbon footprint:

  • Intermodal conversion: This service converts over-the-road shipments to rail, which can reduce carbon emissions by 65% compared to highway transport. Over the past decade, this initiative has helped avoid an estimated 30 million metric tons of CO2e emissions.
  • Empty-mile reduction: J.B. Hunt’s digital platform, J.B. Hunt 360®, optimizes backhaul capacity, eliminating millions of empty miles each year. In 2023, the company avoided more than 4 million empty miles.
  • Carbon Diet Services: This program offers customers advice on cost-effective ways to reduce emissions, using the CLEAN Transport™ Carbon Calculator to assess their carbon footprint.
  • CLEAN Transport™ program: Customers can also participate in a carbon-neutral shipping option, which allows them to purchase carbon offset credits equivalent to the emissions generated by their shipments.

J.B. Hunt remains at the forefront of sustainable transport solutions, continuing to invest in alternative-powered vehicles and innovative technologies that help its customers achieve their environmental goals. For more information, visit the company’s Environmental Sustainability Hub.
