JuiceBox EV Charger Investigation Closed

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has concluded its preliminary investigation (PE24028) into reports of electrical malfunctions and thermal events involving Enel X Way USA, LLC’s JuiceBox Level 2 residential electric vehicle (EV) chargers. The investigation, which began on October 3, 2024, focused on claims that these chargers caused thermal incidents, tripped home circuit breakers, and disrupted EV charging cycles.

Key Highlights:

  • Investigation Period: October 3, 2024 – June 5, 2025
  • Main Concerns: Electrical arcing, thermal incidents potentially leading to fires
  • Affected Equipment: Enel X Way’s JuiceBox Level 2 residential EV chargers
  • Enel X Way Operations Closure: Announced on October 2, 2024, ceasing U.S. and Canada operations as of October 11, 2024
  • Information Request: NHTSA sent a formal Information Request on October 21, 2024
  • Response Timeline: Initial incomplete response on December 9, 2024; complete response received January 24, 2025

NHTSA’s Office of Defects Investigations (ODI) carefully reviewed data provided by Enel X Way, including customer complaints and warranty reports. The analysis revealed no consistent trend or definitive cause behind the reported malfunctions. Moreover, there have been no recent safety-related complaints.

As a result, NHTSA has determined that the current evidence does not justify further regulatory action at this time. However, the agency emphasized that this decision does not indicate an absence of a safety-related defect. NHTSA will continue to monitor the situation closely and remains prepared to revisit the issue if new safety trends emerge.
