Enel X Way North America is closing its electric vehicle (EV) charging business in the US and Canada, effective October 11, 2024. This decision stems from the Enel Group’s strategic shift towards bundling EV charging solutions with its electricity retail offerings, a model that doesn’t align with Enel North America’s current business structure. The company cites high interest rates and slower-than-expected EV sales growth as contributing factors. A third-party firm will be appointed to manage the closure and address outstanding customer and partner obligations.

Key Highlights:

  • Closure Date: October 11, 2024
  • Affected Regions: US and Canada
  • Reason: Strategic shift and market dynamics
  • Customer Support: Discontinued immediately
  • Claims Information: A dedicated claims page will be available soon.

Enel X Way North America acknowledges the impact of this decision on its customers and assures them that the closure will be handled with care and professionalism. While the company is exiting the EV charging market in North America, it remains committed to investing in utility-scale renewables and demand response in the region.

“This decision is in line with the Enel Group’s strategic approach to e-mobility that pursues further growth by providing bundled offers, including private charging solutions, to its electricity customers as well as by developing public charging infrastructure in countries where it has an electricity retail business. By contrast, Enel North America has no retail electricity customer base and was active in the e-mobility segment only through the sale of charging hardware and software.”

The company further explained the market challenges it faced: “Additionally, the dynamics of the EV market in the US have changed quite a lot in the last year and, like many other companies, Enel X Way North America has been impacted by high interest rates which have increased the cost of scaling the charging infrastructure business in a framework of sustained uncertainty where EV sales growth expectations have not been met.”

Enel X Way emphasized the following points for its customers:

  • Residential Charging Hardware: JuiceBox chargers will retain their basic functionality.
  • Software Discontinuation: All Enel X Way software will be discontinued, impacting the functionality of commercial charging stations.
  • App Removal: The Enel X Way App and other related apps will be removed from app stores.
  • International Operations: This closure does not affect Enel X Way customers outside the US and Canada.

Customers with outstanding questions or claims are advised to refer to the forthcoming claims information page.
